NFL training camp roundup: Highlights and storylines from July 22

Packers sign T Zach Tom to a four-year extension

The Green Bay Packers signed right tackle Zach Tom to a four-year, $88 million extension that includes a signing bonus of $30.2 million, the most for an offensive lineman in NFL history.

Tom has steadily improved each season to one of the best tackles in the league. His 85.8 PFF overall grade last season ranked sixth out of 81 qualifying tackles. The former fourth-round pick out of Wake Forest has been especially dominant in the run game, where his 87.8 PFF grade ranked third among tackles.

Bengals EDGE Trey Hendrickson doesn’t report on first day of training camp

Cincinnati Bengals edge Trey Hendrickson did not report to training camp Tuesday with the rest of his team as he continues to express frustration over his contract, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. 

According to Schefter, the Bengals have been willing to offer only one year of guaranteed money, whereas some of the other league’s top rushers — Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt and Maxx Crosby — have gotten three.

Hendrickson is coming off his best year as a pro, leading the NFL with 17.5 sacks and tying Garrett with 83 total pressures, his fourth consecutive season with 70 or more. His 20.0% pass-rush win rate tied Nick Bosa for the third-best mark in the league.

Saints S Tyrann Mathieu announces retirement from the NFL after 12 seasons

New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Mathieu, a third-round pick out of LSU in 2013, steps away from the game after 12 seasons with four teams (Cardinals, Texans, Chiefs and Saints). His career accomplishments include three first-team All-Pro nods, a Super Bowl ring and a spot on the 2010s All-Decade team.

Mathieu was a durable player over his career, playing at least 1,000 snaps in each of his final eight seasons. His best work was in 2015, when his 90.8 PFF overall grade was the highest among 112 qualifying safeties. 

Buccaneers T Tristan Wirfs not expected to miss much time in the regular season

All-Pro right tackle Tristan Wirfs had surgery earlier this month to repair a lingering knee injury, but according to Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, he will be ready “sooner than later.”

After his surgery, Wirfs was reportedly likely to land on the physically unable to perform list and miss the first four games of the season. Bowles’ comments paint a more optimistic picture, with Wirfs potentially missing only a game or two.

Wirfs has been the NFL’s best pass-blocking offensive tackle in recent years. He allowed just 13 pressures (zero sacks) across 664 pass-blocking snaps last season. Pressure was generated against him on just 1.9% of pass plays, the best rate among all offensive tackles in the league.

EDGE Ogbo Okoronkwo signs with the Eagles

Veteran free agent Ogbo Okoronkwo signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Okoronkwo spent the past two years with the Browns after stints with the Texans and Rams earlier in his career. The two best years of his career came in 2021 (79.5) and 2022 (75.1), when he ranked among the top 30 edge defenders in PFF overall grade. 

In Philadelphia, Okoronkwo will look to provide valuable depth along the edge behind Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt on arguably the league’s best defense heading into the season.
