Football has undergone significant changes throughout its history, and the NFL continues to evolve. Teams move from one city to another, games are being played all over the world, and rules that fundamentally change the way the game is played are tweaked, added to, or tossed out almost annually.
One recent change was the addition of a 17th game to the regular season, and the league is also pushing for an 18th game. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow spoke last offseason about the possibility of another game added to the schedule, and said there would need to be an additional bye week to make it work.
Now, just a little over a year later, Patrick Mahomes echoed Burrow’s sentiment, but also said he wasn’t a fan of the idea.
“I think that you’d have to find a way to have more bye weeks and more time spread out,” Mahomes said via CNBC. “You’ve seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games.
“So, if there were a way to get to 18 games…I’m not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you’d have to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys’ bodies.”
Former NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell Jr. recently said that 17 games in the current structure is already too many, and that “No one wants to play an 18th game.” Still, when the NFL wants to make a change, that change is usually eventually made.
As for Burrow’s idea, he thought mixing something the NBA does into the NFL could work for everyone.
