Other Giant observations

Giants roster breakdown: One thought on Abdul Carter and every player on revamped defense | The Athletic

Bobby Okereke: There’s been an odd vibe around Okereke this offseason, beginning with reports that he had fallen out of favor with some in the organization and continuing with his unexplained disappearance from practices this spring. Okereke was brimming with optimism when he spoke to reporters after the team’s first OTA practice, but then he wasn’t in attendance at any of the next four open practices of the spring. Coach Brian Daboll doesn’t provide injury updates during the spring, so it’s not clear if Okereke suffered a setback with the back injury that sidelined him for the final five games of last season. There are some parallels to linebacker Blake Martinez’s unexpected release before the 2022 season, but the main difference is Okereke was brought in by this regime. When the dust settles, the Giants need Okereke to return to the disruptive form he displayed in 2023.

Russell Wilson on his fellow Giants quarterbacks

Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston deserve chance to win Giants’ starting quarterback gig | New York Daily News

There is absolutely something to be said for creating clear direction. No doubt, the Giants need leadership in the worst way on the field and in the locker room. Still, there is nothing wrong with competition, either. In fact, Wilson would earn more credibility with teammates if he beat out Winston in a fair fight rather than having the coaches bury Winston on the depth chart and limit his snaps.

What fans want to see is points and wins. The best quarterback, the one who gives the team the most hope, should be the one that starts the Giants’ season opener at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 7. If Wilson earns that, then it should be him. But not making Wilson beat out Winston and Dart in camp would be disingenuous. Handing him the job without a challenger would be a decision made with optics prioritized over merit and improvement.

The sure things, the maybes and the longshots to make the Giants’ roster, based on our intel | New York Post

You’ve heard of the sports movie “Eight Men Out.” Let’s call Giants training camp “Twelve Men In.”

Post Sports+’s annual exercise of breaking down the offseason roster into three categories — locks, bubble players and longshots — reveals there could be as few as 12 spots up for grabs during camp, which begins when 91 players report on Tuesday.

Darius Alexander, Dexter Lawrence together is ‘winning lottery ticket’ | The Record

The chance to attack single blocks because of opponents’ “four hands” approach in trying to slow down Lawrence will be in play this summer with the Giants seeking the right complement to their best player, especially with what they have added to the defensive front with the addition of Abdul Carter to a group that already included Lawrence, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Alexander who can seize the opportunity to prove to the Giants he is ready to cash in.

“It can be winning lottery ticket playing next to Dex,” one league source told NorthJersey.com and The Record during this year’s NFL Draft. “So what it comes down to: are you good enough to cash it? And [Alexander] has a chance to be that kind of player.”

25 Questions in 25 Days: Strongest position group | Giants.com

No position on the Giants’ roster is stacked like the edge group. The Giants have four players at the position that they should feel comfortable starting against any opponent. Chauncey Golston was an under-the-radar addition to the group in free agency, and he brings more size than the other edge players at 277 pounds. He can move up and down the line but can also be a good run defending edge setter on rundowns with his 34 ¾-inch arms.

1 Trade Each NFL Team Should Consider Before the 2025 Season Starts | Bleacher Report

New York Giants: Flip Edge Kayvon Thibodeaux for draft picks. It feels like this has been on the table since the Giants were getting heavily linked to Abdul Carter ahead of April’s draft. It makes sense, seeing as the organization will likely commit to Carter and Brian Burns on the edge for the long haul, and the front office signed Chauncey Golston in free agency to further supplement the position.

Meanwhile, Thibodeaux has two years left on his contract and has been productive throughout his career, meaning New York could get a good haul for the 2022 first-round pick. That should be enticing for a team that enters the season with questions at quarterback.

Every NFC team’s best offseason decision | PFF

New York Giants: Bolstering the secondary. Lost in the shuffle of the Giants’ quarterback controversy and drafting of third-overall pick Abdul Carter is the fact that they significantly improved their secondary in free agency. New York’s coverage unit was left wounded after Xavier McKinney’s departure last offseason. They’ve remedied that by signing ex-Dolphin Jevon Holland, who is tied for fifth in the NFL in PFF coverage grade since 2021.

The Giants also acquired veteran cornerback Paulson Adebo, who earned an 80.5 PFF coverage grade in 2023. With these additions, as well as their outstanding defensive line, the Giants’ defense carries a ton of potential into 2025.
