The off-season gives us the perfect opportunity to do some evaluation on the Indianapolis Colts’ roster and position groups. The Colts have used the off-season to put in a lot of work to improve and upgrade the roster. Now that the majority of the roster is in place it allows us to look at what positions groups on the Colts roster are the strongest and ranking the top 3.
Wide Receiver
The Colts have a wealth of talent at the wide receiver position staring with a true number 1 in Michael Pittman Jr. Pittman has been the epitome of consistent since being drafted by the Colts back in 2020. He’s out up over 4000 yards receiving yards and 18 touchdowns despite having Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Gardner Minshew and Anthony Richardson as his quarterbacks. WR2 is Alec Pierce who had a breakout year last season when he had a career best in yards receiving and touchdowns and ranked first in the NFL in average years per reception at a staggering 22.3. Behind the two starters the Colts have more quality in slot receiver Josh Downs. Downs can into the league as an underdog after being drafted late in the 3rd round. Since coming into the league he has had bs j to back years of over 60 receptions and over 700 yards receiving whilst becoming a clutch receiving option and a favourite target for Colts quarterbacks. AD Mitchell coming off an inconsistent yet intriguing rookie year boosts hope for a breakout year in which he can out together reliable hands to go with his eye popping route running. Ashton Dulin and Anthony Gould round out the group with primary responsibilities on sir Ian teams. Dulin is an elite special teams gunner and Gould will continue to be relied on to provide a spark in the return game. Overall an exciting unit that really just needs a consistent quarterback to elevate them to the next level.
Defensive Line
Arguably one of the deepest position groups in the colts roster. Leading the defensive line unit is defensive tackle DeForest Buckner. Buckner is a top defensive tackle in the league boasting elite productivity over multiple seasons, he is the heart of the defensive line and shows up against both the run and in the pass rush. His partner in crime is the Colts big man in the line, nose tackle Grover Stewart. Stewart gives you exactly what you want from a big nose tackle and it’s pure run game dominance. Stewart is a premier run stuffing force, he is still working on a consistent pass rush ability but being able to command double teams due to his size frees up one to one matchups for Buckner. The Colts starting defensive ends are likely to be a combination of two of Laiatu Latu, Samson Ebukam and Kwity Paye. All three are different and provide a different skill set. Ebukam is the most well rounded led providing passs rush ability to match run stuffing ability. Latu has the edge in pass rushing ability and after flashing in his rookie year looks set for a breakout sophomore campaign. Paye is a solid run stuffer and an above average pass rusher who seems to just get the job done. The Colts have a veteran inside out guy in Tyquan Kewyscwho despite his injury history always seems to make plays each year. The Colts needed to address the depth issue on the defensive line and they attacked it full on adding a rookie edge rusher in JT Tuimoloau who was a monster in college football at Ohio State. The team added a veteran back up for Stewart veteran nose tackle Neville Gallimore too. The group is rounded out with an exciting third year defensive tackle Astoria Adebawore who the team will hope can take the next step in development and provide rotation for Buckner, rookie defensive tackle Tim Smith and veteran edge rusher Isaiah Land. The group has depth and talent for days but needs to come together as a consistent force throughout the season.
Cornerback
The Colts cornerback position being top 3 on the team after the 2024 season seems crazy but what the team had done in the offseason had elevated it to the next level. The team added a true cornerback 1 in Charvarius Ward in free agency. Ward brings a shutdown playing corner ability that the team has lacked since Vontae Davis in 2014/15. Ward will likely partner Jaylon Jones. Jones had a breakout year in 2024 taking the big step in his development and was relied on as the team’s number 1 corner. The team’s biggest playmaker at corner is its smallest member, Kenny Moore II. Moore has been an elite nickel corner for multiple years now, he provides consistent coverage, tackles and is never too far away from creating a turnover. The rest of the group is intriguing, Juju Brents is a former 2nd round pick from 2923 who despite showing the talent just hasn’t stayed healthy. Samuel Womack provides solid deity and starting ability if needed too. Rookie Justin Walley is one to watch had the team bucked previous trends to draft him this year and has had rave reviews so far in the offseason. A couple of veterans add to the depth in Corey Ballantine and David Long Hr. The sky is the limit for the cornerback group and the team is hoping fresh faces, a new scheme and coaching help take it to a top unit in the league level.
