New York Giants headlines for Friday

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Touchdowns & takeaways from OTA No. 9 | Giants.com

Russell Wilson once again opened the day with a flurry of touchdowns during 7-on-7 drills in the red zone, finding Darius Slayton and Wan’Dale Robinson for scores. Both wide receivers spoke recently about what it’s like to catch passes from the 10-time Pro Bowler.

Cornerback Dru Phillips made perhaps the best non-takeaway defensive play, knocking a ball away on the sideline after a long scramble. Cornerback TJ Moore then prevented a touchdown with a pass deflection.

Up front, Abdul Carter, Elijah Chatman and Brian Burns found their way into the backfield a handful of times. In addition, Burns played volleyball on one pass and swatted it back the other way a good 10 yards.

The rush that Giants fans have been envisioning

How the Giants plan to use Abdul Carter with Burns, Thibodeaux | ESPN.com

This is what the New York Giants need to find: A way to get all three onto the field. Abdul Carter is primarily an outside linebacker in their defensive scheme, a position where they already have Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. Considering all three are capable of recording double-digit sacks, it’s a crowded position.

It’s going to be incumbent on Bowen and Daboll to find a way to make it work. Burns and Thibodeaux already have double-digit-sack seasons on their NFL résumés. Carter is ubertalented and had 12 sacks last season in his first year playing the position at Penn State.

What would you do if you were Shane Bowen entering his second season as Giants’ DC on the heels of a campaign that produced just three wins for a franchise in desperate need of a dramatic leap forward?

“Simple me, complex you – that would be my philosophy,” Jason McCourty said. “What I mean by that: when it looks complicated to the opposing offense, it has to be easy enough for us to understand our responsibilities. Let’s be as exotic in the secondary as we can. If I was Shane Bowen and I had the front I have this year, with what I’ve added on the back end, the goal should be to make the quarterback hold the ball an extra second. Because if he does, we’re getting home and wrecking the game.”

Giants OTA takeaways: Jaxson Dart shows off exquisite touch; CB battle brewing? | The Athletic

Deonte Banks and Flott split reps as the starting outside cornerback opposite Paulson Adebo. That’s an interesting development coming off of Banks’ disappointing second season. And it’s not as if Banks’ reps were being limited, because he worked with the second-team defense during some periods.

Odds are Banks will be a starter — the 2023 first-round pick is more talented than Flott. But there’s nothing wrong with making Banks earn the starting job he’s held for the past two years despite displaying an alarming lack of effort at times last season.

Adebo’s reps haven’t been managed at all in his return from the broken femur he suffered in October. Adebo said his recovery is going great, so he wants to be on the field as much as possible.

Victor Cruz delivers bold prediction for Giants in 2025: ‘We have a good team’ | New York Post

Cruz is somewhat optimistic about the Giants’ fortunes going into 2025, predicting that Big Blue would be above .500 this upcoming season.

“I think we have a good team. I think for the first time, [head coach Brian Daboll] has a team in a draft that you could feel he wrapped his arms around. These are his guys and we’ll see how he develops them and, and get them ready to play.”

What We Learned: Giants have ‘a lot of new energy’ this spring | Giants.com

Speaking of that quarterback room, Slayton had the best description of it yet: “It is an interesting compilation of individuals, but Jameis and Russ are that veteran presence. Jameis is a wild card though, just as a human being. So having his personality around is amazing, but also, they both have great presence and leadership about them. You see the – age is probably a little rude. The seasoning in both of them, the veteran leadership they both have. And also you have Dart, kind of the young kid, he’s kind of learning to find his way, but he has two good mentors to learn from.”

Albert Breer on the Schoen/Daboll hotseat:

If the Giants make the playoffs, then we’re not talking about their job security. If they don’t, there will be shades of gray to the decisions—and that’s where Dart’s play comes in. Because the NFC East drew the NFC North and AFC West this year, the schedule is a bear. So if the Giants win seven or eight games, Dart takes the job in midseason, plays well and energizes the group late, I could see the owners not wanting to pull the plug. Conversely, winning seven or eight games with Russell Wilson probably won’t be enough.

That is the scenario where I see Dart’s presence playing into whatever the Maras and Tisches decide to do going into 2026.

Daniel Jones opens up to The Post on Giants divorce for first time | New York Post

Of course Daniel Jones was hurt with how it ended with the Giants. He tells the Post he’s doing his best to move on. “Try not to hold any of that bitterness or hurt, hold anything personal against anybody.”

Did the Giants (as John Mara said) do everything possible to screw him up? “There’s a lot of people in the NFL who deal with some of those same situations, but I could have done a better job handling those times.”
