Wide receiver is continuing to look for a new team
We continue to get questions in the Big Blue View inbox regarding free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis, the one-time Buffalo Bills receiver who visited with the Giants in mid-May.
Why didn’t the Giants sign him? Are they still interested in Davis? Does he have other options?
Well, let’s discuss the 26-year-old Davis, taken by the Bills in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Giants GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were, of course in Buffalo as assistant GM and offensive coordinator, respectively, at the time.
Davis, released by the Jacksonville Jaguars just one unproductive season into a three-year, $39 million contract, recently visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers, and has now scheduled a visit with the New Orleans Saints.
Whether any of that means the Giants and Davis are no longer interested in each other is uncertain. What is also uncertain is whether Davis, who missed the final seven games of the 2024 season with a torn meniscus, can currently pass a physical to begin practicing.
Davis to the Giants makes sense on one level because of Davis’ success with Daboll in Buffalo, catching 70 passes over two seasons for 13 touchdowns. The Giants also want to be more vertical in their passing attack, and Davis averages 16.2 yards per catch for his career.
Are the Giants committed to Jalin Hyatt as their fourth wide receiver? Do they believe someone else on the current roster can fill the role, if they don’t think Hyatt can?
Training camp remains six weeks away, so there is plenty of time to answer the Davis question.
