The Linc – CJGJ responds to Vic Fangio’s comments

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 6/5/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

C.J. Gardner-Johnson claps back at Vic Fangio’s comment that Eagles traded DB for salary cap reasons – The Athletic
Texans defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson took to social media Wednesday to respond to a comment his former coach and current Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio made regarding Philadelphia’s decision to trade Gardner-Johnson to Houston. The Eagles received offensive guard Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round selection in the exchange, while the Texans also added a 2026 sixth-round pick. When asked about the trade during OTAs on Tuesday, Fangio called it “a salary cap thing.” “Howie (Roseman, Eagles GM) made that decision. I was fine with it,” he added. Gardner-Johnson reposted a graphic featuring the quote to his Instagram story and added text that read, “Just don’t do them young guys like y’all did me.” He also included a 100 emoji and a flexed bicep emoji.

The CJGJ and Eagles Offseason Rollercoaster Ride is Playing Out Again – Crossing Broad
CJGJ wasn’t afraid to make his thoughts known after he was traded, going on IG live and saying “people showing their true colors,” which is funny because hours later he seemed to understand this was just a salary thing, saying while live-streaming that “It was no bad blood.. Them young guys just gotta get paid down there.” I guess Fangio’s comments didn’t sit well with him and it’ll unravel over the course of next season like it typically does when CJGJ is traded or not re-signed. He argued online with Lions fans last year after he signed back in Philly. This is just the CJGJ playbook. You can’t take the junkyard dog out of the boneyard. That chip on his shoulder is what gives him that edge on the field and he’s backed it up everywhere he’s went. You can’t deny now that CJGJ has spent two years on the Birds, in two different schemes, and on two top-5 defenses that he can’t talk his shit because he backs it up. He helped us win a Super Bowl so he can have whatever outbursts he wants online especially when he inevitably comes back in a year or two.

Eagles sign speedy undrafted rookie wide receiver – BGN
The Philadelphia Eagles are signing undrafted rookie free agent wide receiver Ife Adeyi, according to the NFL’s official transaction notice. Adeyi was not picked in the 2025 NFL Draft after playing two years at Sam Houston State. In 16 total games played, he logged just 37 receptions for 345 yards (9.3 average) and one touchdown. He did have nine rushing attempts go for 76 yards (8.4 average) and a touchdown in addition to returning 10 punts for 63 yards (6.3 average).

Analysis of Eagles DC Vic Fangio’s revelatory press conference – PhillyVoice
What’s Vic’s view of the starting safety competition between Sydney Brown and Andrew Mukuba? “It’s a competition that is going to take a training camp and a few preseason games to sort out,” Fangio said. “And Tristin’s in that, too.” #JimmySays: It’s interesting that Fangio went out of his way to make sure we didn’t exclude Tristin McCollum from that conversation. McCollum was ahead of Brown on the depth chart for the entirety of the 2025 season.

Spadaro: Vic Fangio’s defense provides ample opportunity for youth to shine – PE.com
“I look at this year very similar to last year,” Fangio said at a press conference on Tuesday, “in that this time last year, you know, we had a lot of turnover in personnel from the previous year. You had (Zack) Baun, nobody knew what he was at this point last year. You had Nakobe (Dean), who hadn’t played any meaningful NFL football in his first two years. You had (linebacker) Oren Burks, who we had just signed. You had Isaiah Rodgers, who we had just signed. You had (Moro) Ojomo, who didn’t play hardly at all in his rookie year. You had Nolan (Smith), who didn’t play hardly at all in his rookie year. We got Chauncy (C.J. Gardner-Johnson) back. We drafted Q (Quinyon Mitchell), Cooper (DeJean), Jalyx (Hunt). We had a lot of question marks at that time. This year, those names are replaced. (Kelee) Ringo, Adoree’ (Jackson), Sydney (Brow), (Tristin) McCollum, (Azeez) Ojulari, (Joshua) Uche, Byron Young, Gabe Hall, (Thomas) Booker, Jihaad (Campbell), all the draft picks – (Andrew) Mukuba, (Ty) Robinson, Smael (Mondon), and the rest of the rookies.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl ring ceremony is postponed, sources say. Here’s why. – CBS News
The Philadelphia Eagles will have to wait longer to get their new Super Bowl rings. The Birds were supposed to get their rings on Friday, but sources say that has been delayed due to production issues with the jeweler. The Eagles have yet to set a new date for the ring ceremony. The ceremony was initially scheduled for Friday, which is one day after the final day of organized team activities. The Eagles will hold a mandatory minicamp next Tuesday. The Philadelphia Inquirer was the first to report the news.

The Wentz-Foles Eagles had the most dysfunctional locker room, former player says. But that was only part of the problem. – Inquirer
“And so you had Carson, who, after a good game, he’s reading to see what they’re saying, but after a bad game, he’s reading to see people absolutely [expletive] on him,” Tate said. “I would walk up in the bus and just kind of see him, like [slinks down in chair], to himself. Like, it’s OK, bro, just bounce back. And then you had Foles, who, coming to the locker room, he spoke with everybody. I wouldn’t get a single pass the entire game, but in the fourth quarter, he’d make me think it was still coming. ‘Hey, Golden, stay ready. I’m coming to you.’“And I was part of Carson’s clique, but it felt like with Carson, he had his four, five, six guys on offense and defense that he liked and he hung with, and that was all that mattered, right? Everyone else it felt like, ‘Bro, do you want to hang out with me? Do you want to have a relationship? You want to have lunch, dinner? Can we do something together?’”

Joe Whitt offered a ton of insight into how and why the Commanders defense will be better in 2025 – Hogs Haven
This seems to confirm that Kinlaw will be used the way the Jets used him in 2024 – at times playing the DT spot in a 4-3 defense, but at other times, lined up on the outside shoulder of the tackle on the strong side (where the tight end is aligned). With the Jets in 2024, per PFF, Kinlaw played 316 snaps at left tackle and 299 snaps at left end. This contrasts with his alignment pattern with the 49ers. With SF in 2023, Kinlaw lined up as a DT on 418 snaps, but played DE on only 116 snaps. In 17 games with the Niners in ’23, Kinlaw produced 25 tackles and 3.5 sacks. In 17 games with the Jets in ’24, his production jumped to 40 tackles and 4.5 sacks. On a per-snap basis, he produced 9.3% more tackles in 2024 than he had in 2023 and his run defense grade from PFF jumped from 35.6 in ’23 to 50.8 in ’24. He earned healthy pass rush grades from PFF in both years (71.9 and 68.2). The addition of Kinlaw to the roster seems to be part of a deliberate plan to use him as an inside/outside defensive lineman who can operate in diverse schematic alignments without the need for constant substitutions.

Micah Parsons contract negotiation is business as usual for the Cowboys – Blogging The Boys
The Cowboys will get Parsons signed. What happens between then and now will be a lot of posturing. Jerry and Stephen Jones will act like the two sides aren’t close, say some silly things in the media, and then, just when we’re not looking, a new deal will be done. We know this because we’ve heard this song all too many times. And like Bohemian Rhapsody, we all know the lyrics. His price might be a little high, little low, but anyway the wind blows, it doesn’t really matter. Parsons will get extended, and we will all be spared from this monstrosity. While this is right on brand for the Cowboys front office, why does it have to go down this way? Truth be told, many contracts take time, and this happens all across the league. Except with Dallas, it just happens at a much higher frequency. Why is that?

Trade suggestion would beef up New York Giants’ offensive line – Big Blue View
In the never-ending effort to offer GM Joe Schoen suggestions for ways to upgrade the New York Giants’ offensive line, Pro Football and Sports Network has an intriguing idea. PFSN has proposed a trade for New York Jets’ guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. PFSN says that the Giants “should not be content with the depth chart as it currently stands.”

Ranking NFL’s most likely worst-to-first teams for 2025 season – ESPN
7. New York Giants, NFC East. It’s a little surprising that FPI doesn’t have the Giants lower, as they are currently 27th in the NFL after being 31st before the 2024 season. But their QB room — with Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston and Jaxson Dart — should be an improvement over the options they had last season. I also expect them to have a better defense, which had a very poor turnover rate last season and adds edge rusher Abdul Carter to an exciting pass rush. The problem for New York is the schedule, rated as the toughest in the NFL based on both FPI and projected DVOA. That starts with the games in the Giants’ own division, which now has a strong Commanders team, along with games against the NFC North and AFC West. Plus, the Giants play the 49ers and Patriots, who are both mentioned above as teams that should be better in 2025.

Derek Carr’s reason for retiring from the Saints is unlike anything in sports – SB Nation
New Orleans Saints’ QB Derek Carr retired in the offseason after what was a weird process overall for the signal caller and the New Orleans Saints. Carr’s shoulder never fully healed from the injury he suffered in 2024, and he was likely looking at offseason surgery and a long recovery window while still cashing a huge $30 million check. Instead, Carr chose to retire. Carr explained his decision to walk away from the money in an interview with Front Office Sports. He offered a shocking explanation for why he decided to hang up his cleats. “That part was tough because I didn’t want to have surgery and just sit there and—it sounds crazy but—just take the Saints money,”
