Phinsider Question Of The Day: Can They Afford To Keep Them All Edition

Phinsider Question Of The Day: Can They Afford To Keep Them All Edition

We all know the saying around the NFL that you can never have too many pass rushers. I suppose that’s true, and our Miami Dolphins, at least for now, appear to be in great shape in that department heading into the 2025-2026 NFL season. The Dolphins head into the season with three of the best pass rushers in the game, assuming they are all healthy. Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, as we all know, are coming off a season that they did not finish due to injuries. Then there’s Chop Robinson, who by all accounts seems to be an ascending future star in the NFL.

Robinson isn’t going anywhere since he has already flashed, and we can only assume that there’s nowhere for him to go but up at this point. Then there’s his cost. If Chop continues to show that he’s the player we thought he was going to be at the end of last season, he will be nothing short of a bargain, at least until his rookie deal runs out. As for Chubb, the team gave him a big deal when he was traded to Miami, and while he only counts 12.3 million against the cap this season, the following two seasons balloon to just over 31 million per season. Phillips will be playing on his 5th year option this season with a cap number of just over 13 million.

If both Chubb and Phillips return healthy this season and demonstrate they can still compete at a very high level, the team will face a decision. Chubb is set to have a significant cap hit, and one can only assume that if Phillips performs at a high level, he too will secure a substantial contract from either the Dolphins or another NFL team. While it would be quite the luxury to move forward with three stud edge rushers, is it the most prudent play for the team financially? One of the most significant criticisms of the team overall is their inability to retain the players they draft and develop. This has long been the recipe for success for many teams, with a few notable exceptions. There’s also the argument that the team gave up a lot for some of the players that they traded for and thus need to do their best to get their return on investment.

So tonight’s Phinsider Question Of The Day is:

If both Phillips and Chubb return and play at a high level, should the team try to keep both of them, trade one of the two, or let Phillips walk at the end of the year?
