We have knee-jerk opinions about Eagles roster moves. It’s time to look back on them one year later to see how they actually performed.
The Philadelphia Eagles finished the 2024 NFL season by lifting the Lombardi Trophy after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. A championship season coming to a conclusion leaves little reason to look back and grade, because the grade recorded in the history books will be that of Super Bowl Champions.
However, the championship roster of the Eagles wasn’t assembled all at once, so here’s a look back at the pieces that were added the 2024 offseason through various means, including free agency, trades, the draft and even the waiver wire, along with a quick glance at where each of them is now.
2024 Philadelphia Eagles free-agent signings
Free agency kicked off the offseason in March, and the Eagles knocked it out of the park.
RB Saquon Barkley
Barkley led the NFL in rushing, finishing the season with 2,005 yards in spite of resting in preparation for the playoffs and sitting out the 20-13 Week 18 win over the New York Giants. In the wake of the most productive season of his career, Barkley signed a two-year extension that makes him the highest-paid running back in NFL history and has him under contract through 2028.
LB Zack Baun
Primarily a special teams player during his time with the New Orleans Saints, Baun flourished in Vic Fangio’s defense, being selected as a first-team All-Pro while finishing fifth in voting for Defensive Player of the Year. He will return in 2025 after signing a three-year contract in the offseason.
OL Mekhi Becton
After battling injuries early in his career with the New York Jets, Becton found a home starting at guard for the Eagles and logging the second highest snap count of his career in 2024. Becton will be taking his talents to the West Coast in 2025 after signing with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency.
LB Oren Burks
Burks started a pair of games on defense for the Eagles, but more notably finished the 2024 season second on the team in special teams snaps. He will not be back for 2025 after signing with the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency.
WR Parris Campbell
After final roster cuts, he signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the 53-man roster in October, and finished the season with six catches for 30 yards. Signed with the Cowboys in the offseason.
CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson
CJGJ started sixteen games for Philadelphia, pulling in six interceptions on the way to helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl. Gardner-Johnson was traded to the Houston Texans in the offseason in a deal that brought back Kenyon Green and a fifth-round pick.
OT Nick Gates
Gates played in nine games, starting one, after being signed from the practice squad. He was released at the end of February and remain a free agent.
DE Bryce Huff
Expectations were high for Huff in 2024, coming off a career year in which he recorded 10.0 sacks. Unfortunately, his on field performance in 2024 fell far short of expectations, but still in his prime at just 27 and is under contract with the Eagles for two more seasons.
CB Avonte Maddox
Initially released by Philadelphia during the 2024 offseason, Maddox re-signed with the team a few weeks later and went on to play in every game while starting three times. He will not be back in 2025, after signing with the Detroit Lions.
WR John Ross
The former ninth overall pick in the draft failed to stay past roster cuts, but spent a couple of months on the practice squad during the season. He caught a single pass for six yards before being released in early December.
TE C.J. Uzomah
Uzomah was released late in training camp, but was signed to the practice squad in October before being promoted to the active roster in December. He played 132 offensive snaps for the Eagles before landing on injured reserve after the NFC Championship game.
LB Devin White
White signed a one-year, $7.5M contract with Philadelphia as free agent, but was released in October without ever seeing the field for the Eagles.
Free-agent signings that didn’t make the active roster
QB Will Grier: Spent two months on the practice squad before being released.
CB Tyler Hall: Hall landed on injured reserve during training camp, and was released with an injury settlement ahead of roster cuts.
OL Matt Hennessy: Released at the end of training camp.
CB Parry Nickerson: Released at the end of training camp, Nickerson was brought back as a member of the practice squad in October, and will be back in training camp with the Eagles after signing a new contract in the offseason.
DT P.J. Mustipher: Failed to make it out of training camp.
WR DeVante Parker: After signing with the Eagles as a free agent, Parker opted to retire before the offseason program had even finished.
OL Max Scharping: Scharping was waived at final roster cuts and opted to sign with the practice squad of the Washington Commanders.
Devin White: White signed a one-year, $7.5M contract with Philadelphia as free agent, but was released in October without ever seeing the field for the Eagles. He then signed with the Houston Texans, where he recorded 19 tackles in seven games before signing with the Las Vegas Raiders in the offseason.
Players the Eagles claimed off waivers in 2024
By definition, in-season waiver claims have to go to your active roster. Both of the Eagles were during the preseason, so only one made it to the 53-man roster.
DT Byron Young
Young was waived by the Las Vegas Raiders at final roster cuts. He did not appear in a game for the Eagles during the 2024 season, but is set to be in training camp with the Eagles in 2025.
Eagles waiver claims that didn’t make the 53-man roster
TE Armani Rogers: Claimed off waivers from the Commanders during training camp, Rogers was waived by the Eagles at roster cuts.
Players the Eagles traded for in 2024
Both players the Eagles traded for in 2024 ended up making the roster.
WR Jahan Dotson
Dotson caught 19 passes for 216 yards while starting a half dozen games for the Eagles in 2024 after coming over in August from Washington. Philadelphia recently declined his fifth-year option for 2026, but he’s under contract for one more season in 2025.
QB Kenny Pickett
After trading for him in March, Pickett mostly mop-up duty, but started the 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 before being traded to the Cleveland Browns in the offseason.
Players selected by the Eagles in the 2024 NFL Draft
When you’re as leveraged on the cap as the Eagles are, the draft picks need to hit. And Philly got some good ones in 2024.
CB Quinyon Mitchell
Mitchell started sixteen games as a rookie, finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. A great start.
DB Cooper DeJean
DeJean earned extensive playing time as a rookie, including during the Super Bowl when his first career interception happened to be a pick-six off Patrick Mahomes that gave the Eagles a commanding 17-0 second quarter lead.

OLB Jalyx Hunt
Hunt played in all but one game as a rookie, seeing spot duty on defense and playing a key role on special teams. Hunt took on a bigger role as the season went on, and in the postseason recorded a sack and a half, a total that matched his performance for the entirety of the regular season.
RB Will Shipley
Shipley was most often on the field for special teams as a rookie, while backing up the league rushing leader. However, he did manage to record 82 rushing yards during the regular season, a total he nearly matched in the postseason when he ran for 77 yards and the first touchdown of his career late in the NFC Championship Game victory over the Washington Commanders.
WR Ainias Smith
Smith started the 2024 season on injured reserve, but was activated to the 53-man roster in October. Over the second half of the season he played in seven games, including one start, and pulled in seven catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.
LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Trotter saw the field primarily on special teams during his rookie year to the tune of 295 snaps, which was third on the team.
OL Trevor Keegan
The fifth-round pick played 35 offensive snaps in a single game of action during the 2024 campaign.
WR Johnny Wilson
Saw the field during all but one game as a rookie, catching five passes for 38 yards and a touchdown while also playing 98 special teams snaps during the year.
OL Dylan McMahon
Waived by the Eagles at the end of training camp, McMahon was initially signed to the practice squad before being poached by the Los Angeles Rams.
