The Linc – 49ers Super Bowl-losing quarterback is now making more than the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning QB

The Linc – 49ers Super Bowl-losing quarterback is now making more than the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning QB

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 5/17/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Where Brock Purdy’s new contract places him among NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks – SB Nation
In terms of average per year, Purdy’s contract puts him level with Jared Goff at $53 million per year, ranking him tied for seventh on the list of NFL quarterbacks. That puts Purdy behind Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Burrow, Lawrence, Allen, and Tua Tagovailoa in this regard. That also puts Purdy ahead of Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and yes, Mahomes in this category. This is the nature of the business when it comes to quarterback contracts. The next QB up for an extension is going to sign a deal with a big number attached to it.

It’ll Take Only One Win to Make Brock Purdy’s $265 Million Deal Worth It – The Ringer
The other two are Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts, and where Purdy ultimately lands on the spectrum between the two as a playoff performer won’t just determine whether this extension was worth it—but how the Kyle Shanahan era in San Francisco will be remembered. Hurts isn’t just a champion now. He’s had two separate playoff runs that have cemented his reputation as a postseason riser, and that’s exactly what Philadelphia was banking on when they gave him a $255 million deal after his first Super Bowl appearance. Tagovailoa’s career arc, by contrast, has been more difficult to parse because of his struggles with head injuries, but his sole playoff appearance confirmed some league-wide preconceptions of him—namely that he’s not good enough to get a talented but flawed team over the hump, and probably won’t deliver deep playoff runs in exchange for his $212 million contract.

5 Eagles games I’m most looking forward to in 2025 – BGN
Eagles vs. Detroit Lions, Lincoln Financial Field – Sunday Night Football, Week 11 (11/16), 8PM ET. It’s the NFC Championship Game we all thought we were going to see, only played in Philly and not at Detroit’s Ford Field. Thankfully, the Lions’ defense was in tatters by the time they took the field against Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional Round last winter, which allowed the Eagles to earn another home NFC title game against a lesser opponent. This is the game the NFL should have scheduled for their Opening Kickoff in Week 1, but there is logic to having it in Week 11. Both teams will be smack dab in the middle of their seasons, both will have worked out any early season kinks, and while there may be injuries with which to deal, it will be an outstanding measuring stick for both teams. There will be a lot of running in this one, with the Eagles and Lions utilizing the running game more than any other team in the league. Philly should be favored at home, and the Lions won’t have Ben Johnson calling the plays this time around (he’s now Chicago’s head coach), but it should still be perhaps the league’s best match-up all season and the Birds’ most challenging game of the season.

Betting buzz: Cowboys-Eagles leads early rush of NFL Week 1 betting – ESPN
With the NFL schedule fully released, bettors are already flocking to sportsbooks to place their wagers on the 2025 slate. No surprise, the most popular contest out of the gate is the opening night matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, which has attracted the most handle at ESPN BET, DraftKings and FanDuel. After the game was announced on Monday, ESPN BET opened the contest at Eagles -7 (-105), which is where it remains as of Thursday afternoon. DraftKings reports the Eagles as its most backed team by bets, and its second-most backed team by money since the schedule release.

Looking Ahead – Iggles Blitz
I mentioned the team going 12-5 in a previous post. A few people questioned that, pointing out the Eagles would beat various teams perceived as threats. The Eagles are the best team on paper right now. They were the best team in reality last year. There is a chance they will have a great season and go 15-2 or something like that. What I think people forget is that the best team doesn’t always win a given game. The Eagles lost to the Falcons because the defense struggled, Saquon dropped a pass and AJ Brown was hurt and missed the game. The Eagles were the better team, but didn’t win the game. That kind of stuff happens in most seasons.

New Eagle AJ Dillon hopes he gets to rush the Tush Push – NBCSP
The Packers earlier this offseason proposed a rule change that would eliminate the push element of the Eagles’ famous play. That rule proposal was tabled in early April at the NFL owner’s meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, but could come up for another vote next week in Minnesota. The fate of the Tush Push has been a hot topic all offseason, but Dillon is hoping the play sticks around long enough for him to get in on it during the 2025 season. “Absolutely,” Dillon said. “I think it’s the most efficient play in football. At least while the Eagles have been running it. I don’t know exactly what the stats are but ballpark range 90% first downs. I definitely want to be on that side of it rather than trying to stop.”

Spadaro: Eagles Autism Challenge highlights how Eagles fans change the world – PE.com
The Stewart family was part of the 7,266 participants on Saturday morning – a record turnout in the eighth year of the incredible community event – at Lincoln Financial Field and it was, as usual, incredible, inspiring. A total team effort that raised more than $10 million, taking the total above $40 million in eight years to bring awareness to action for autism. “I think the way this year started – it was different than any other,” said Ryan Hammond, the Executive Director of Eagles Autism Foundation. “We began the season in South America, in Brazil, and the Eagles Autism Foundation mobilized. We held a scientific symposium, brought researchers together. We had an All Abilities Football Camp. It felt special from that point alone. And then we had the kind of season we had, making the Super Bowl, and the Foundation was such an important part of that run. We worked with the League and made the Super Bowl more inclusive – it was incredible to be on the ride with the team.

NFL confirms Eagles-Commanders, Packers-Bears will be played on Saturday, December 20 – PFT
NFL.com has since changed its Week 16 slate. Instead of moving the games to Saturday, December 20, however, the schedule now has the two games under this heading: “Games Not Yet Scheduled.” With no date identified. That said, the league says the games will be played on Saturday. And we’ll regard that as conclusive. Still, the glitch lingers. It all makes us wonder whether, at some point, the league was considering moving a pair of traditional Saturday games to Friday, given the conflict with three college football playoff games.

Ivanka Trump hits the NovaCare Complex, leaves a note for Eagles defender Eli Ricks – Inquirer
Trump also visited the locker of cornerback Eli Ricks, who was smitten by the president’s daughter at the White House last month. After the visit, Ricks wrote on social media, “After seeing her in person Ivanka is exactly my type.” Unfortunately for Ricks, Trump is married to Jared Kushner, and the couple has three children together. But that didn’t stop her from leaving a playful note at his locker that said, “Stopped by to say hi! Sorry to miss you! Go Birds!”

Denver Broncos complete additions and promotions to front office – Mile High Report
One major outside addition was announced too. It also happens to a reunion story in the Mile High City. After several years with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jordon Dizon is heading back to Denver to become their next Director of Pro Personnel. This is another move I like for one major reason. Dizon was able to get quality experience underneath Howie Roseman who is one of the league’s best GMs. That should certainly be beneficial in his new role with the Broncos.

Why the Cowboys should seriously consider giving George Pickens an extension now – Blogging The Boys
From a logistical standpoint the Pickens trade has reminded me, and many others, of the Philadelphia Eagles acquiring A.J. Brown when the 2021 NFL Draft began. Philly spent a first-rounder to land Brown and clearly the move has worked out for them. But what is notable about that whole sequence is that the first thing the Eagles did was give Brown an extension to tie him to their organization for the future. They did this before he ever played a down for them. Why? Because you don’t trade a premium pick for someone who you don’t plan on being around and the earlier you pay, the better the rate you get.

Big Blue View mailbag: Draft trades, Jaxson Dart, flying machines, more questions – Big Blue View
Steve, right now it is not a guarantee that Evan Neal will be playing guard. Indications are that will be the case, but we won’t know for certain until media gets to watch an OTA toward the end of the month and we see for ourselves. That said, I think it is hard to predict what might happen. Neal isn’t the only consideration. How does Marcus Mbow look this season? Do the Giants think Mbow is a tackle or a guard? Do they choose to keep Jermaine Eluemunor? Jon Runyan Jr.? Does Jake Kubas develop into a starting-caliber player? Maybe Neal plays well and becomes a starting guard for the Giants for the next few seasons. Maybe, like Mekhi Becton did for the Philadelphia Eagles, he played well and cashes in on the free agent market. It would be a good thing for both sides if Neal plays well for the Giants this year.
