Other Giant observations

How the Giants ended up with Dart, Wilson and Winston at QB | ESPN.com

The Giants’ transformation at the game’s most important position emanated from a high-level plan that GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll presented to owner John Mara in the waining days of the 2024 season.

Per a source with knowledge of the conversation, they outlined all the potential quarterback options: from the top of the draft with Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart; to potential free agents such as Justin Fields and Russell Wilson; to potential trade and cut casualties including Matthew Stafford, Kirk Cousins and Aaron Rodgers. They talked about the possibility of adding a veteran (or veterans) in addition to landing a quarterback in the draft. At least one of each was preferred.

How much rope does Brian Daboll have? Those first nine games are beyond difficult for the Giants. It would be a challenge for a contending team, let alone one like the Giants, who are still rebuilding. Daboll’s seat was scorching hot at points last year. A terrible start will only match, if not exceed, those nuclear temperatures. Will John Mara make a change if the Giants sit 0-4? Or 0-5? What about 1-6 or 1-7?

Muddying the waters even more is what the Giants invested in Dart. It became clear, from the team’s in-house documentary chronicling the draft process, that he is Daboll’s guy. That might buy him more time or lead to a dysfunctional situation with an in-season coaching change.

NFL schedule: Each NFC team’s win total projection for 2025 season | NFL.com

New York Giants: 5.4 wins. Trying to win at Washington (in Week 1) and hosting Kansas City (on Sunday Night Football in Week 3) in the first three weeks of the season is tough in itself. That becomes a much tougher ask if rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart ends up being the team’s starter. The Giants’ schedule is punishing overall and especially so midway through the campaign, with back-to-back road games in Denver (Week 7) and Philadelphia (Week 8) and home games against San Francisco (Week 9) and Green Bay (Week 11) sandwiched around a trip to Chicago. The difficult sequence finally ends in Detroit in Week 12.

The good news is the Giants should be a better team than last year. The bad news? They’ve got the toughest strength-of-schedule in the league, at least based on last year’s records. Even worse, it’s toughest at the start. The Giants play 10 games against playoff teams overall, and six of those come in the first eight weeks of the season. By the time they get to New Orleans in Week 5, the Giants will have played at Washington, at Dallas and at home vs. the Chiefs and Chargers. It’ll be tough for them to avoid an 0-4 start. Given how tough their division is, plus a home slate that includes six playoff teams and then the 49ers and Cowboys, the Giants are going to really earn everything in a must-win year for their GM and coach. Record Prediction: 6-11

Giants’ brutal schedule means New York will toil in irrelevance again, but Jaxson Dart will play | New York Daily News

Week 4: Sunday, Sept. 28 vs. Los Angeles Chargers (1 p.m., CBS). Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart makes his first start as Daboll pulls the fire alarm early to try to save his job. The jet-lagged Chargers start slow on the scoreboard, but their punishing brand of football wears the Giants down, despite some exciting scrambles from Dart. Harbaugh then outschemes Daboll during some critical moments in the fourth. Prediction: Chargers 24, Giants 13 (0-4)

“The Giants could play 40 percent better this year in every aspect of the game … and win 5 games.”

With Giants’ schedule set, when might Jaxson Dart replace Russell Wilson? | NJ.com

They get a little extra rest between the Detroit trip in Week 12 and the New England trip in Week 13, because they play the Patriots (who aren’t good) on a Monday night. But as with the Chicago game, starting Dart against the Patriots would mean debuting him on the road.

While Week 10 in Chicago is one weak point in the schedule (which would mean Dart starting the final eight games), that feels a little early. Debuting him in New England would give him the final five games, with a bit of extra time before his debut and the bye week right after it.

NFL schedule 2025 winners and losers: 49ers finally catch a break; are Giants doomed? | The Athletic

LOSERS: New York Giants’ early gauntlet The Giants likely will be underdogs throughout that early gauntlet, and it’ll be a challenge to find optimism within that early slate after their 9-25 record over the past two seasons. There’s a real chance for an 0-4 start that would make life pretty stressful for coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.

This paves the way for the Giants to open the season with Russell Wilson or Jameis Winston at quarterback before finding a smooth landing spot for rookie Jaxson Dart. But after the private planes circled MetLife Stadium last season looking for heads to roll and the endless stream of questions over the future of the regime, how much chaos will Dart have to endure when making his debut?

3. New York Giants at Denver Broncos (Week 7)

On the surface, this contest may not catch one’s eye. But if Russell Wilson emerges as the Giants’ starter, this will assuredly be a game to keep track of. Wilson will make his second trek back to Denver after being cut by the team during the 2024 offseason. Despite the Broncos swinging for the fences in acquiring Wilson, he produced only a 69.8 PFF passing grade across two seasons out west, leading to an unceremonious exit. While Wilson and the Steelers ventured to Empower Field last year, Justin Fields was the starter, with Wilson not playing a snap.

The area where he could lead the league in five years: Passes of 20-plus air yards. Dart was second in the FBS with 35 completions of 20-plus air yards, which was a big part of Ole Miss‘ high-octane air attack. That ability to deliver the ball to the deeper parts of the field will add another layer to Daboll’s playbook and allow the Giants to get even more out of Nabers and the rest of their pass catchers.

Giants’ Abdul Carter receives high praise from Shawne Merriman | USAToday.com

Former NFL pass rusher Shawne Merriman was a guest on “Good Morning Football” earlier this week and shared some high expectations for Carter’s rookie season with the Giants:

“I believe Abdul Carter is going to be the Defensive Rookie of the Year,” Merriman said. “Just what he can do on the field right now, you can put him on there and he can learn everything else. A guy that is that explosive, you can put him on the field and he’s going to make plays regardless. I just like this kid’s mentality.”

2025 offseason grades for all 32 NFL teams | PFF

New York Giants: B- The Giants took swings at quarterbacks Geno Smith and Matthew Stafford in the trade market, and even called up to No. 1 overall for Cam Ward. But they were forced to settle for Jaxson Dart at the back end of Round 1. Defensive backs Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland were great additions via free agency for a defense that earned a 52.2 PFF coverage grade last season. The Giants’ draft was very good overall, earning an A- in PFF’s draft grades.
