At Commanders and Cowboys, Patrick Mahomes in primetime? Thanks, NFL
The New York Giants have gotten off to miserable starts in each of the past two seasons. In 2024, they started 1-3, won a game and then lost 10 straight. In 2023, they started 1-5.
With an incredibly difficult stretch to open the 2025-2026 NFL season based on information that has leaked as of Wednesday morning, it won’t be easy for the Giants to avoid a similarly atrocious start.
New York reportedly opens the season with back-to-back NFC East road games, first at the Washington Commanders and then at the Dallas Cowboys.
The Jayden Daniels-led Commanders went 12-5 last season and won a playoff game. With Daniels entering his second NFL season the Commanders figure to be just as good, if not better.
The Cowboys finished a disappointing 7-10 a season ago after winning 12 games in each of the previous three seasons. The biggest issue in Dallas was a Week 9 hamstring injury that landed quarterback Dak Prescott on season-ending injured reserve. Brian Schottenheimer replaces Mike McCarthy as head coach for the Cowboys.
The Giants open at home with a primetime Sunday Night Football game against Patrick Mahomes and the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs. We guessed that this would be a primetime game for the Giants. Why wouldn’t it be? Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift in the New York/New Jersey media market on primetime. Of course.
All of that is followed by Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers coming to MetLife Stadium in Week 4. The Chargers went 11-6 before losing to the Houston Texans in the Wildcard Round of the AFC playoffs in 2024.
There is obvious potential there for an 0-4 start. If that happens, you can already hear the calls for rookie Jaxson Dart to take over as the Giants’ starting quarterback.
A reminder that the schedule will not be officially released until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
