Many people believed that the Colts would look to add to it’s defensive tackle depth at some point in this weekends draft. What I didn’t expect was that the DT they would take would be from Alabama:
Just an interesting tidbit in Chris Ballard draft history.
Since 2017 28 NFL teams have drafted at least one player from Alabama. The four teams who have not:
1. Bills
2. Chiefs
3. Colts
4. Seahawks— Chris Shepherd (@NFLscheme) April 13, 2025
Smith is the first Alabama player drafted by the Colts since Ryan Grigson took Ryan Kelly. With Kelly gone, I guess Chris Ballard decided it was time for him to go back to the Crimson Tide well. Here’s what Lance Zierlein had to say about Smith before the draft:
Hard hat defensive tackle who is much more of a plugger than a playmaker. Smith has average size and traits, but he thumps blockers with accurate strikes and anchors down to clog lanes. He can set a firm edge or control the block as a two-gapper but a lack of length could catch up with him as a pro. He has enough power to get into the pocket on occasion, but he might need scheme help to get home as a rusher. Smith plays with pretty good power and sound technique. He could become a rotational defender in the NFL.
This pick makes sense on a lot of levels. The Colts have been searching for someone to come in and stop the run behind Grover Stewart for years and Smith seems like he might be just the guy to do it. As a sixth round pick it isn’t likely that he’ll produce in year one, but time will tell. For now, Smith’s name is another added to a roster of defensive linemen that will need to shake itself out over the summer and into camp.
