With a physical style and something to prove, Skattebo is ready to make his mark in New York
Cam Skattebo isn’t new to physical football in fact, he’s been bulldozing defenders since before most kids learn multiplication.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Skattebo said with a grin, when asked if he was running through 6-year-olds in Pop Warner. “It’s always been a very physical game for me.”
Now, the 219-pound Arizona State bruiser is bringing that same fearless energy to the NFL. On Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected Skattebo with the 105th overall pick, adding a tone-setting, downhill runner to a backfield already in the midst of transformation.
“I’m a physical, downhill, get-to-the-end-zone back,” he said. “I love to score touchdowns. That’s what I do.”
At 5-foot-9 and 219 pounds, Skattebo is more than just a short-yardage option. He’s a versatile playmaker with strong hands, evidenced by 45 receptions and more than 600 receiving yards last season. His bruising style pairs well with the shiftier Tyrone Tracy Jr., creating a complementary one-two punch in the Giants’ backfield.
Skattebo’s path to the NFL wasn’t smooth. Coming out of high school, he had no FBS scholarship offers — just determination and a chip on his shoulder. He worked his way up through Sacramento State, transferred to Arizona State, and carved out a reputation as one of college football’s toughest runners.
“Growing up in a hard background and with an older brother that picked on me a little bit — he set me up for success,” Skattebo said. “My dad was hard on me, too. He preached every day that football could take me somewhere. And now it’s coming to light.”
Skattebo said he felt right at home when he visited the Giants facility before the draft.
“When I got there, I felt comfortable,” he said. “The coaches were very nice to me, made me feel like they wanted me a lot. New York was awesome to me. I love being there, and I’m glad I’m going to be a Giant.”
The Giants haven’t guaranteed anything, and that’s just how Skattebo likes it.
“They told me I need to come in and work, and what happens, happens,” he said. “I’m going to give it everything I’ve got. Whatever role they’ve got for me, I’m ready to take it on.”
He hasn’t spent much time in New York just a brief visit before the draft but he’s ready to call it home.
“I wasn’t too bummed about not going to the Heisman ceremony,” he said. “But now I’m going to New York for a long time. So let’s do it.”
From Pop Warner truck sticks to playoff heroics to the NFL Draft, Cam Skattebo has always played one way: downhill and all-out.
