The Giants get their quarterback of the future
The New York Giants executed a trade back into the first round and selected Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss at No. 25 in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday. The duo of Abdul Carter at third overall and Jaxson Dart in a trade up was widely anticipated, but no less exciting for it.
The Giants traded the 34th overall pick, the 99th overall pick, and a future third-round pick to get back into the first round to get their quarterback of the future.
How does he fit?
Right now, Dart’s fit is to sit and learn behind Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Eventually, Dart will be in line to be the Giants’ quarterback of the future.
Jaxson Dart is the youngest quarterback in the draft, yet has started more than 40 games in the SEC. Dart got better every year, improving his completion percentage, yards per game, yards per attempt, sack rate, interception rate, EPA, and QBR in each of his years at Ole Miss.
What he brings to the Giants
Right now, probably nothing. If Dart is starting in 2025, either something has gone horribly wrong with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston — or something has gone incredibly right with Dart.
Most importantly, Dart is heralded around Ole Miss for his leadership and magnetic personality, as well as his competitiveness. He scored 79 touchdowns as a senior in high school after being ignored by scouting services as a junior, and broke school records set by Archie and Eli Manning as a senior at Ole Miss.
Dart brings a wide variety of traits that would fit in the type of offense that Mike Kafka and Brian Daboll have wanted to run for the last three years. Dart has a strong arm with the ability to drive the ball, leading FBS in yards off of deep passes. He flashes an impressive ability to deliver the ball to receivers in-stride down the field, as well as challenge coverage in the short and intermediate area of the field.
Dart is also a good athlete who’s had 1,498 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns on the ground over the last three years for Ole Miss.
The Giants’ newest quarterback might not have ELITE traits, but his traits are all very good and he has a real chance to be much more than the sum of his parts.
