Most Giants fans don’t want to see their team move up for a quarterback

We’re a bit more than 24 hours away from the 2025 NFL Draft, and there seems to be a an interesting dynamic building regarding the New York Giants.

So far we’ve had three major mock drafts feature the Giants draft Penn State EDGE defender Abdul Carter with the third overall pick.

Each of Todd McShay, Mike Mayock, and Peter Schrager have the Giants selecting Carter in their final mock drafts.

That, in and of itself, is in line with the odds from FanDuel as well as the results of the SB Nation Reacts national pole.

But after the No. 3 pick is where things get interesting.

Each of the three mocks also features the Giants trading back into the first round to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart.

The thinking is that Dart fits the type of football that Brian Daboll wants to play as a bigger-bodied passer with athleticism, plus arm strength, and a willingness to throw the deep ball. Each also believes that the Giants will be aggressive in pursuing “their guy” as opposed to hoping a quarterback of the future falls to them.

However, most Giants fans would rather they wait and take who falls to them.

Only 42% of Giants fans would approve of the team trading up from 34 and back into the first round for a quarterback.

Part of the calculus behind a trade up is that the Giants only have Jameis Winston under contract beyond 2025. There’s also the fact that if Russell Wilson helps the Giants win in 2025, they may — once again — be out of range to draft a quarterback they like. On the flip side, if they lose enough to be in position to draft their preferred quarterback next year, it could be their successors who make the pick.

It may very well be now or never for Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll if there’s a quarterback here they view as a potential Franchise Quarterback.

It’s also true that a fifth-year option is incredibly valuable for the quarterback position and the economics of roster building.

However, it’s also true that this draft has a tremendous number of potential starters. The picks used to trade back into the first round could help fill out the Giants roster. Players like Tyleik Williams, T.J. Sanders, Jonah Savaiinaea, or Tate Ratledge could help the Giants right now, while it would take a year to see the yield from a trade up for a quarterback.

The good news is that we’ll find out what course the Giants take by the end of Thursday night.
