The Giants make a big swing just before the NFL Draft by trading for 49ers QB Brock Purdy in a very bold hypothetical from Pro Football Network.
The New York Giants enter draft week still holding the No. 3 pick in the first round. With the Browns looking more and more like the favorite to land Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, it sure looks like the Giants are in prime position to draft Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
But with a talent like Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter potentially right there for the taking, the Giants would be more than justified in selecting a blue-chip defender with the hope that they’ll figure out the quarterback position later on in the draft.
The week of the draft is always good for a surprise or two, and a recent article over at Pro Football Network touched on five VERY bold pre-draft trades that could shake up the week’s events, including one involving the Giants.
In this trade, the Giants strike a deal with the 49ers to land quarterback Brock Purdy, whom the Niners chose not to extend in this situation in hopes of landing another quarterback they can lean on with a rookie contract. The Giants are sending the No. 3 pick to the Niners while also receiving pick No. 100 from San Francisco to help sweeten the loss of a premium pick on top of having to fork out a sizable extension.
“A large part of Purdy’s value stemmed from his cheap cost. With Deebo Samuel departing and other weapons like George Kittle and Jauan Jennings needing extensions, it’s fair to ask if Purdy truly elevates the offense enough to warrant that type of deal.”
“If the 49ers want to preserve the same salary structure they’ve enjoyed since 2023 (when they moved on from Jimmy Garoppolo), what if they used Purdy as a trade chip to find their next quarterback? The Cleveland Browns and New York Giants don’t seem poised to take the leap on Shedeur Sanders in the top three anymore, but both teams still need long-term solutions at quarterback.”
If the Browns do take Hunter with the No. 2 pick, they would also be scrambling to find a starting-caliber quarterback before the start of the regular season. The thing is, their current cap situation is a lot murkier than New York’s and it would not allow them to possibly take on a deal such as this one. The Giants currently have two other quarterbacks under contract on cheap one-year deals. So of the two teams picking in the top three who aren’t guaranteed Miami’s Cam Ward, it’s the Giants that make the most sense.
Purdy is still young enough to represent a potential franchise quarterback for the Giants. More importantly for the job security of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen, his development has already occurred on another team’s watch. While that might not excite the fan base, raising the team’s floor in 2025 is an important factor for the head coach and GM after John Mara publicly expressed impatience about the Giants’ slow rebuild after the 2024 season.
I think this is a strong point. Raising the floor of a football team is not a bad thing, especially when you’re coming off having a top three pick in the draft. The Giants would get their quarterback with the chance to use their second and pair of third-rounders (back-to-back at 99 and 100) to help make Purdy’s job easier.
Still, a move like this seems highly unlikely. The Giants have signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston for this year, and GM Joe Schoen said recently that if you have a chance to draft a blue chip player — like Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter — that “you don’t pass on that type of player.”
So what do you all think of this very bold hypothetical? Would you be content with a deal like this or is it just a bit too insane and unrealistic for your liking? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
