Other Giant observations

McShay: ‘It’s contentious’ within the Giants’ draft room | USAToday.com

Long-time NFL insider and commentator, Todd McShay, spoke to a rival general manager this week and learned that the Giants may be split on Sanders — some want him at No. 3 overall, while others feel that would be an overdraft.

“It’s a little bit contentious inside the Giants’ draft room,” McShay said on The Ryen Russillo Podcast. “There are some people that are pushing hard for Shedeur…I also wonder, too, at this point in time with ownership — we hear a lot of stories after the fact of ownership getting involved when it comes to the quarterback position and drafting that high. So, that part is fascinating.”

Pat Shurmur tells The Post why Shedeur Sanders will make one NFL team ‘very, very happy’ | New York Post

Search high and low, inside and out, and up and down and it will be difficult to come up with more of a credentialed insider about the Giants, their quarterback of the recent past and their potential quarterback of the near future than Pat Shurmur.

This is a guy who knows his way around the Giants, the big-city market, the pressures that come with filling the most important position on the field, the reasons why Daniel Jones was once coveted, the reasons why he is convinced Shedeur will succeed. And compared the two players, stating “I think they’re very similar prospects, from a player and a person.” He meant that as a compliment.

Giants’ late Shedeur Sanders workout raises more questions than answers | New York Daily News

Sure, the timing and logistics of setting up these private workouts during the busy draft season can be tricky. Returning this late to Boulder, Colo., however, unequivocally indicates two things:

That Sanders remains in consideration by the Giants, and that the Giants have lingering questions about him that must be answered in person. It reinforces what the Daily News has heard throughout the process: that there are supporters of Sanders in the Giants’ building but that not everyone is sold.

Third round, 99th overall: RB Cam Skattebo, Arizona State. They have done a lot of work on running backs during the pre-draft process, which seems to indicate they’re looking for a backfield mate for Tyrone Tracy. It’s not a high-value position in general manager Joe Schoen’s world, though, so don’t expect them to take the leap until Day 3. But they might address this need quickly then, especially if this 5-fot-9, 219-pound battering ram is still available. He could be the power complement to Tracy’s moves and speed. He also can give the Giants a valuable receiver out of the backfield. He had 45 catches for 605 yards for the Sun Devils last season to go with his 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground.

Five pivotal slots in Round 1 that could change the direction of the 2025 NFL Draft | NFL.com

Pick 3 New York Giants. With the Titans widely expected to take quarterback Cam Ward at No. 1 overall and the Browns seeming more and more likely to select two-way star Travis Hunter at No. 2, draft drama might start at No. 3. Do the Giants select elite pass rusher Abdul Carter or grab one of the top two remaining quarterbacks (Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart)? It feels like Carter at the moment, with New York having signed veteran signal-callers Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency. Then again, few expected the Falcons to take Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall in last year’s draft, seeing how they had signed Kirk Cousins to a nine-figure deal one month prior. And now the Giants are hosting Sanders for a private workout.

2025 NFL Draft: Our favorite offensive line fits for NY Giants | The Record

Jackson Slater, Sacramento State: A plug-and-play guy at all five spots, and then at the Senior Bowl, Slater showed he could play all three interior positions. The Giants are open to drafting a starter at either guard spot, but this could be an opportunity to cash in for the long-term, too. Slater started 44 games in his career, earning first-team All-Big Sky honors three times. He was a standout at the Senior Bowl and tested extremely well at the NFL Combine. He is 6-foot-3 and 311 pounds with 32-inch arms. The tape reveals great mobility, strength, and natural leverage that should translate to the next level.

Takeaways from GM Joe Schoen’s pre-draft press conference | Giants.com

“We’ll be open to all options” in terms of trading up and down, said Schoen. “We’ve received some calls. We like our options. We like who will be there.”

Schoen said there are a lot of “respectful debates” in the draft room if they love two players at different positions. This week and next are about figuring out the discrepancies. They’re going to “run out the shot clock” leading up to next Thursday night.

2025 NFL All-Trades Mock Draft: 32 Deals for 32 Teams | SI.com

In this exercise, all 32 first-round picks are traded, and just for the anarchy of it all, we’re only using 2025 draft choices to make the transactions happen.

6. New York Giants: Tyler Warren, TE, Penn State. The deal: Raiders trade No. 6 (446) and No. 68 (73) to Giants for No. 3 (514)

If the Giants move back, Warren would be an intriguing pick here. Considered by many the best tight end in a very strong class, he would become a quality weapon alongside second-year star receiver Malik Nabers. While New York would love to solve its quarterback issues, the answer might have to wait a year. In the meantime, the Giants grab a stud to add punch to the offense.

Giants release DL Ross Blacklock | Pro Football Talk

The NFL’s daily transaction report brings word that they have released defensive tackle Ross Blacklock. Blacklock joined the Giants’ practice squad last December and signed a future contract with the team in January. Blacklock entered the league as a 2020 second-round pick in Houston and played 29 games for the Texans over his first two NFL seasons. He was traded to the Vikings in 2022 and spent time with the Jaguars, Colts, and Titans during the 2023 season.

Giants approached Eagles about trade: ‘It made me scratch my head a little bit’ | NJ.com

According to ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan, the Giants approached the Philadelphia Eagles about tight end Dallas Goedert, who is reportedly available in a trade. Goedert has a year left on a four-year, $57 million deal with no guaranteed money left. (He comes with an $11.7 million cap hit.) But a trade between the two division rivals seems unlikely right now.
