Torry Holt can’t get in because the Hall of Fame thinks “there’s enough of those Rams players” already
Torry Holt isn’t in the Pro Football Hall of Fame because the committee thinks that there are already enough players from the Greatest Show on Turf team already, according to former Rams head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Is Holt really being snubbed year after year because his teammates were too talented?
In an interview with The Coach JB Show on Friday, Martz was interviewed about his experiences with the Rams and his thoughts on the modern NFL. When Martz is asked about Holt and whether he should be in the Hall of Fame or not, the former head coach calls his snub “the greatest injustice in all of American sports”.
But then Martz goes a step further, telling host Jason Brown and his co-host that it’s been leaked that the top people on the voting committee believe that there are already “enough” players from the ‘99 Rams in the Hall of Fame already. If that’s true, then Holt’s annual snub from the Hall of Fame looks even worse, and downright prejudice against him for being on arguably the greatest team of all-time.
“The top three guys that do this, they’re dead set and one of them said this in a meeting and it got out that, “Ah there’s enough Rams players from that team, we don’t need anymore,” according to Martz.
The Hall of Fame committee is obviously not supposed to be voting and inducting players based on how many of their teammates are already in Canton.
The ‘99 Rams features four current Hall of Famers and one coach:
- QB Kurt Warner (inducted 2017)
- RB Marshall Faulk (inducted 2011)
- WR Isaac Bruce (inducted 2020)
- LT Orlando Pace (inducted 2016)
- HC Dick Vermeil (inducted 2005)
Holt, who retired after the 2009 season, has been snubbed year after year for a decade. He led the NFL in receiving yards in 2000 and 2003, made seven Pro Bowls, and ranks 17th all-time in receiving yards at 13,382. He has more receiving yards than Hall of Famers Andre Reed, Steve Largent, Michael Irvin, and Calvin Johnson.
Holt may never get into the Hall of Fame. That shouldn’t happen, but it definitely shouldn’t happen just because Warner, Faulk, Bruce, and Pace are already in.
