Report: Texas A&M DE Shemar Stewart to visit Colts for a pre-draft 30 visit

The freakiest athlete of this year’s draft class will soon make his way to Indianapolis for a visit.

According to Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network, the Indianapolis Colts are set to host freakshow athlete, Texas A&M defensive end Shemar Stewart for a pre-draft Top 30 visit.

As alluded to, Stewart is an unprecedented athlete who has become arguably the most polarizing draft prospect of this cycle. At 6’5”, 267 lbs, he lit up the NFL Scouting Combine en route to a 10.0 RAS score — an all-encompassing athletic score that is meant to quantify Combine and Pro Day testing numbers to therefore showcase the value of one’s athleticism.

The NFL is quickly becoming populated with ridiculous athletes who rush the passer, but Stewart’s 1-of-1 athleticism has caused for some fun draft discourse throughout the pre-draft process.

The reason why Stewart has become this polarizing figure is due to the fact he lacked production at the collegiate level. Not just your typical raw player but an elite athlete combination, Stewart boasts the extreme of both sides of the coin.

Not only is he the most athletic prospect at his position to date, but Stewart only logged 4.5 sacks throughout three years at Texas A&M. He no doubt improved as a run defender across each season, however, as someone who has been mocked regularly in the 1st round, you’d hope his sack totals would be higher.

With that being said, Jaguars DE Travon Walker has blossomed into a defensive cornerstone for Jacksonville after they took the project in Walker over Aidan Hutchinson.

Regardless, Stewart’s draft projection has gone from as high as Top 10 in the early and middle stages of the pre-draft process, to now there being a real shot that he could fall to the latter half of the first round and even potentially the top of the second round.

Had his stock not taken a bit of a hit, the Colts’ interest would be a bit worrisome to some fans given the track record of general manager Chris Ballard’s history of drafting freak athletes with little-to-no production — particularly when it comes to pass rushers.

With that being said, therein lies a reality where the Colts either trade back in the first round, recoup draft capital, and then take the shot on Stewart. Conversely, Chris Ballard and Co. could also find themselves looking to move up in the second round to either the late first or early second in order to take a shot on Stewart.

With how Stewart’s draft stock has fluctuated over recent weeks, it’s nearly the perfect outcome for the Colts.

Anybody who even remotely follows the NFL Draft knew that Chris Ballard and Co. were salivating at the mouth like Pavlov’s dogs once Shemar Stewart finished his day of workouts at the NFL Combine. Now, we all will wait to see if and when the Colts will take the bait.
