Armand Membou, OT, Missouri
Unfortunately, I’m not sure the 49ers could be any happier with the way this draft has played out.
Let’s start with the team. San Fransisco had a woeful Super Bowl hangover (thanks in part to a league-leading 141.2 adjusted games lost due to injury) that just lost a plethora of role players in free agency in preparation for a Brock Purdy extension. The team did little to replace multiple losses across both the offensive and defensive lines, and question marks remain in the wide receiver room with Brandon Aiyuk’s injury and the loss of Deebo Samuel. With various stalwarts (Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Trent Williams) getting older, there are many directions this pick could go.
That being said, at 11 the pick has to be offensive tackle Armand Membou out of Missouri. Membou is an elite athlete at a premium position that just so happens to be a need in both the short and long term. Ever since nailing the combine (9.90 RAS, per Kent Lee Platte) Membou’s stock has been on a rocket ship, and he has now widely cemented himself as a top-10 pick, even top-5 for some. He’s one of four linemen ever to record a 30-inch vertical and sub-5.00 forty yard dash at 315+ pounds, joining only Tristen Wirfs, Trent Williams, and Will Campbell. His movement skills jump off of the screen, making him a perfect fit for Kyle Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme. Membou recorded the 2nd most outside zone run blocking plays while recording a top-3 PFF grade on those plays, so he already has experience and proven ability in Shanahan’s system. A nasty finisher with powerful hands, Membou is still loose and fluid in pass protection. What he lacks in height he more than makes up for in bulk and has the requisite length to succeed in the NFL, and he absolutely shines on the move during outside zone runs.
The 49ers can slot Membou in at his natural position at RT while Colton McKivitz slides over to LG to replace Aaron Banks. Eventually he can become the heir apparent to Trent Williams on the left. BGN knows better than anyone the value in building up the offensive line, so establishing a dominant tackle duo to protect your high dollar quarterback is too tantalizing to pass on. The 49ers sprint to the podium and count their lucky stars that their perfect talent and prospect fit somehow fell through the cracks.
