Open thread: What has been the Detroit Lions’ best offseason move?

Open thread: What has been the Detroit Lions’ best offseason move?

The NFL offseason is far from over, but the Detroit Lions have made a ton of decisions thus far. What has been your favorite.

The NFL offseason has slowed to a crawl. The coaching carousel is far in the rear-view mirror, free agency has dried up, and with the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine behind us, the only real NFL Draft things to talk about is relatively boring pro days and the endless wave of mock drafts.

So now is as good of a time as any to take inventory of the Detroit Lions’ offseason. Things got off to a chaotic start as their coaching staff was picked apart by teams hoping to upgrade their own staff. However, the Lions steadily rebuilt with a pretty even distribution of promotions and external hires. When it comes to free agency, they were intentionally modest, but they were able to bring back some key players on reasonable deals while replacing their biggest free agency loss (Carlton Davis) with a player on a similar tier (D.J. Reed).

Today’s Question of the Day is:

What is the best offseason move the Lions have made thus far?

My answer: There are some coaching hires that I considered here. I really do like the addition of David Shaw as pass game coordinator, and I thought the Lions did a really clever job of replacing Antwaan Randle El by moving Scottie Montgomery to wide receivers coach and getting Tashard Choice to reunite with Jahmyr Gibbs as the new running backs coach. But it’s tough to project how those coaches will do in their new roles.

What isn’t much of a mystery is how good of a player Levi Onwuzurike is. While his talents may have been a bit overstated prior to free agency, he’s still a young player who had a strong 2024 campaign and seemed to get better as the season went on. Getting him back on a one-year, $4 million deal seems like highway robbery considering how crazy the defensive tackle market has been recently. And his return allows for some more flexibility along the defensive line, whether it means more Josh Paschal on the inside or having several interior players get some work on the outside.

While not the flashiest move, I think re-signing Onwuzurike was their best. What was your favorite move of the Lions’ offseason so far? Scroll to the bottom of the page and let us know in the comment section.
