Ashton Jeanty, RB, Boise State
Things change pretty quick in the NFL.
If seven years ago you told me “Pete Carroll and Tom Brady team up for the NFL franchise in Las Vegas” I probably would’ve been amazed Brady ever considered quarterbacking anywhere but New England.
But here we are in what feels like year one of Brady really having, according to some reports, significant influence over the football decisions of the Las Vegas Raiders. His first big call was hiring Pete Carroll in an attempt to bring stability to an organization that has had anything but as of late.
While the call to bring in Carroll was likely Brady’s, I believe he will let Pete run things from here on out. Pete’s pick in this draft is Ashton Jeanty, RB Boise State.
Carroll has always had a penchant to emphasize running back talent while devaluing offense line talent. His list of drafted running backs in premium rounds includes:
-Zach Charbonnet (2nd round)
-Kenneth Walker (2nd round)
-Rashaad Penny (1st round)
-CJ Prosise (3rd round)
-Christine Michael (2nd round)
They also of course went out and got Marshawn Lynch from the Bills.
Point is, Pete was probably ahead of the game on this recent RB revolution in the league.
What about need? Las Vegas finished dead last in rushing yards last season with 1,357. They would’ve finished last in rushing touchdowns as well (10) if the team down in Arlington wasn’t trotting out the ghost of Zeke Elliott and finishing with only 6 team rushing TDs. Las Vegas also only had TWO runs of 20+ yards by RBs. Tying them in last with the Chiefs.
New (soon to be extended) QB Geno Smith needs a trustworthy option in the backfield if the Raiders hope to make any noise in the loaded AFC West this year. With Jeanty, the Raiders go from a train wreck to somewhat watchable.
Somewhere, I’d like to think the ghost of Al Davis approves of the pick.
