The Linc – Howie Roseman talks CJGJ trade, Dallas Goedert’s outlook, and more

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Six takeaways from Howie Roseman’s owners meetings media session – PhillyVoice
“So, we have to make some tough decisions here. It seems like the moment to do that from a big picture perspective, not getting any individual decision because I think all those individual decisions can be discussed whether they were right or they were wrong. But I think from our perspective it was just more of this overall philosophy and that’s what I was trying to say at the combine. I’m very proud of us being aggressive in the trade market and creating an aggressive market but it wasn’t the time for that right now for where we are and the faith that we have in some of the young players. So we’re looking forward to those guys stepping up and there will be an opportunity to step up.” #JimmySays: The eight Super Bowl starters from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 drafts are Jordan Davis, Cam Jurgens, Nakobe Dean, Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean. The “five or six” players competing for starting jobs going forward are Grant Calcaterra (if Dallas Goedert isn’t on the roster), Tyler Steen, Sydney Brown, Kelee Ringo, Moro Ojomo, and Jalyx Hunt. You could also maybe add Jeremiah Trotter to that list on the assumption Dean won’t be ready for the start of the 2025 regular season. Because the Eagles have drafted so well in recent years, they have a lot of young players they’re going to have to pay pretty soon. They’re going to choose home-grown young talent at important positions over good-not-elite veterans at less important positions.

Howie Roseman explains why he traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson – NBCSP

Howie Roseman knows it doesn’t make sense in a vacuum. To understand why he traded away starting safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson earlier this month, Roseman explained, you need to look at the bigger picture of where the Eagles sit from a team-building perspective. And even then, it doesn’t make it any easier to lose a good player that helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl. “Every dollar that you spend is a dollar less that you can spend on some of these younger players that maybe you want to retain,” Roseman said at the NFL annual meetings on Monday morning. “Getting out in front of it was important to us. And again, hard decisions. Not asking anyone to agree with them but that’s part of our job.” The Eagles’ 2025 offseason has been different than last year. They let plenty of talented players — Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Mekhi Becton, etc. — leave in free agency earlier this month. And then they traded Gardner-Johnson to Houston for offensive lineman Kenyon Green and a pick-swap. Roseman on Monday morning at The Breakers resort in South Florida explained the trade for the first time since pulling the trigger a few weeks ago.

Howie Roseman speaks: 10 takeaways on the Eagles’ offseason, from explaining the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade to a non-commital response about Dallas Goedert’s future – PHLY

Roseman was non-committal about Dallas Goedert’s status, which might be a revealing answer within itself. Goedert, 30, has one year remaining on his contract. He’s due $14.25 million in cash. It’s not guaranteed. He’s been subject to trade rumors. Roseman said there was no update. “Obviously, Dallas has been a tremendous player and person for us,” Roseman said. “We have tremendous respect for him, and in both those regards as a player and in person. The opportunities that we got into free agency with Harrison Bryant and (Kylen) Granson were just opportunities we felt were good for our football team. And I know certainly Dallas is a unique player. So really, that’s kind of where we stand.” The ambiguous answer strikes similarities to Haason Reddick last year. Reddick was traded shortly after the league meetings.

2025 NFL draft team needs: Depth chart holes, prospect fits – ESPN+

Top three needs: S, DT, LB. The decision to trade C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Texans created an opening at starting safety opposite Reed Blankenship. Former third-round pick Sydney Brown should have a chance to vie for the spot, but Philadelphia will want to add competition and depth there before the start of the season. Similarly, the loss of Milton Williams in free agency means defensive tackle could use reinforcements behind Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis. The Eagles inked All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun to an extension, but with Nakobe Dean still recovering from a torn patellar tendon, it would be smart to strengthen the linebacker room. Tight end should be mentioned here as well, particularly if the Eagles move on from Dallas Goedert as has been speculated. Prospect to fill a need outside Round 1: Kevin Winston Jr., S, Penn State. A rangy free safety prospect, Winston is coming off an ACL injury suffered in mid-September, but he has the profile of a patrolman from a deep safety alignment. He could supplant Blankenship in the starting lineup.

Why so many one-year contracts in free agency? – PE.com

This time, the approach is different. “Experience helps shape the direction that you go in, so in 2018 there was a theme that we thought that the players who helped us win Super Bowl LII had earned the right to defend their Championship,” Roseman said. “After a couple of year run that didn’t end the way we wanted it to, we are asking, ‘What can we do to help us win a third World Championship?’ Hopefully, that’s this year, so everything we are doing is hopefully putting us in position to have another parade down Broad Street. It’s going to look a little bit different, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t trying to win as quickly as possible and as much as possible. I can promise that there are no other goals other than to find a way to have that confetti fall on our heads on the final day of the season.”

Eagles need 8 other teams to vote against “tush push” ban at NFL owners meeting – BGN

In order for the tush push to officially be banned moving forward, the NFL needs 24 teams to vote in favor of removing the play — but that means that the Eagles need just eight other teams, in addition to themselves, to vote against the rule change. This seems to be the hot topic (again) at the annual meeting, and most coaches and GMs have been very vocal one way or the other when it comes to their thoughts on the matter. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said that they expect to have the votes from Jonathan Gannon (Cardinals), Shane Steichen (Colts), and Kellen Moore (Saints) — all who have benefitted from the play during their time in Philly.

Saquon Barkley, Brandon Graham, and the Lombardi Trophy throw out the first pitch at Phillies home opener – Inquirer

The Phillies got massive ovations during introductions ahead of the team’s home opener against the Colorado Rockies — but no one received bigger cheers than the two Eagles players in the house to throw the first pitch. You knew there were going to be some Eagles cameos after Big Dom — in a red tracksuit, of course — was spotted taking photos with the Phanatic on the field pregame. But exactly who was showing up was kept under wraps until just before game time, when the park started playing “Fly, Eagles Fly,” and newly retired Brandon Graham emerged from the dugout with the Lombardi Trophy in hand. Right behind him was NFL offensive player of the year Saquon Barkley, and the pair threw out ceremonial first pitches to Brandon Marsh and Bryson Stott.

Nick Sirianni on contract extension: These things take care of themselves – PFT

“These things will take care of themselves,” Sirianni said, via Eliot Shorr-Parks of WIP. “I’m not too concerned about it. I don’t really get into contracts with anybody. I’m not going to get into it on this one. It will take care of itself.” There have been some ups and downs in Sirianni’s four seasons as a head coach, but he’s won a Super Bowl and another NFC title while making the playoffs all four years. Given those results, it’s easy to understand Sirianni’s lack of stress about getting a new deal before Year Five is underway.

Evaluating Contracts Cut In 2025 – Over The Cap

As the NFL undergoes a transition in priority from veteran free agency to the incoming rookie class, this is a good time to take a look at what veteran contracts were terminated in preparation for and during the beginning of free agency–and see what trends can be identified. [BLG Note: The Eagles saved $34 million in 2025 cash (not cap space but straight cash) by cutting Darius Slay and James Bradberry. Only three teams have saved more cash by cutting players this offseason.]

Nearly 3 out of 4 Commanders fans say they are most excited about one player acquired this offseason – Hogs Haven

It’s still a bit unclear exactly what the Washington starting offensive line will look like in Week 1 of the regular season. I’d say that the only two unquestioned player positions right now are Tunsil at left tackle and Tyler Biadasz at center. It seems likely that the other three starters will be Brandon Coleman, Nick Allegretti and Andrew Wylie, but the final configuration of the line may depend on whether the coaches end up with Coleman lining up at left guard or right tackle. Of course, long-term, the right guard position will be manned by Sam Cosmi, but having torn his ACL in the playoffs and undergone surgery on January 28th, Cosmi clearly won’t be ready to play at the start of the season and could very well miss all of 2025.

Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones says team does not believe they wait too long for deals – Blogging The Boys

Living in a world of this logic, NFL teams have to accept that they will make players who play the positions in question top dollar whenever the time comes (assuming the players have proven to be worth market rate). There are exceptions to every rule, but the laws of supply and demand have existed for as long as time now. It is fair to say that when it comes to players who you really believe in (like Lamb or Prescott or Parsons) that getting the deal in question done as soon as possible sees you pay the lowest amount possible, even if it is the “highest” at the time you strike it. This appears to be a philosophy that Stephen Jones disagrees with. Speaking at the league’s owner meetings he touched on the idea that the Cowboys are working with Micah Parsons towards an extension, but he added that they do not feel that they have a habit of waiting too long. Regarding the latter point, he outright said that they disagree with people who say that they do.

QB at No. 3? New York Giants GM Joe Schoen might have other plans – Big Blue View

Big Blue View is not in attendance at the NFL owner’s meetings. The overwhelming consensus of Giants media that is attendance and spoke with New York Giants GM Joe Schoen on Monday, though, is that the Giants do not appear to be planning on selecting a quarterback at No. 3 in the 2025 NFL Draft. Pat Leonard of the Daily News wrote that Schoen “sounded very much like someone who would draft a non-QB at 3 today.” Dan Duggan of The Athletic wrote: “… the biggest takeaway I had from his 20-minute session with reporters at the owners meetings: He laid the groundwork for not taking a QB at No. 3. “Now, he might be being cagey but he really hammered how you can’t force the pick if you don’t think a guy is a franchise-caliber QB.” Ryan Novozinsky of NJ.com wrote that “Schoen seemed content with the idea of not drafting a QB with the No. 3 pick.”

Buffalo Bills HC Sean McDermott opposes Tush Push, concerned for players’ health and safety – Buffalo Rumblings

To this point, internal data from the NFL has provided no conclusive evidence that the short-yardage play — which resembles a rugby play — is dangerous to players. There’s currently a 0% documented injury rate, though millions of people saw Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones attended to following a snap featuring it during Super Bowl LIX. So why would McDermott support moves to ban the play from the gridiron? He watched first hand as Buffalo converted 80% of rush attempts for one yard or less in 2024 (ahead of the 2024 AFC Championship game). Early on in his press conference, McDermott was asked why he was opposed when the data just doesn’t back it up: “Well, number one, I’m not a doctor so I’m not going to get too deep into that situation there in terms of how much data, how much sample. I don’t think that’s really always the best way to go. I think — when you’re looking at — there’s other data out there that suggests when you’re in a posture like we’re talking about, that that can lead to serious injury. And I think being responsible and proactive in that regard is the right way to go.”
