The NFL Competition Committee looks at tweaking rules every offseason. The most recent example being the new kickoff rules. This offseason the committee is looking at the Tush Push. The Green Bay Packers were the team that suggested the play be banned. There are rumors floating around there might be enough votes to get the rule change passed. It will be the topic of choice until the NFL draft comes up at the end of April.
In theory, there’s nothing wrong with being stronger than the team across from you. From a pure competition standpoint, it’s ridiculous to ban the play. However, just like when a player is deciding where to play, it isn’t always purely about sport. The NFL is a business 1st and the play isn’t fun to watch. The Commanders were threatened with giving up an automatic touchdown after committing so many penalties trying to stop it in the playoffs last year.
Casual football fans outnumber the serious fans considerably. I don’t believe the play should be banned from a sporting perspective, but I believe it will get banned because it’s just not enjoyable to see. 4th and 1 is an exciting play and that’s being taken away by an effective, but boring play.
