The New York Giants have not one but two new veteran quarterbacks.

The New York Giants are signing Russell Wilson — who turns 37 in November — to a one-year contract worth “up to” $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.

The Wilson addition comes just several days after the G-Men signed another veteran free agent quarterback in Jameis Winston.

Signing Winston to a two-year, $8 million deal seemed sensible enough for the purposes of having a bridge quarterback/quality backup with a rookie quarterback also in the mix. But why then also spend additional resources on Wilson?

Once upon a time, Wilson used to own the Eagles. But he’s obviously past his prime at this point in his career. Wilson is 23-33 in his last 56 games as a starter.

Feeling the pressure of being on the hot seat, Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll seem very interested in raising their team’s floor this season. And it’s not necessarily at the expense of the organization’s future if they’re able to also add a talented rookie quarterback who provides legitimate hope moving forward.

But accomplishing that much is no sure thing. And it’s quite possible the Giants are just wasting resources by signing both Wilson and Winston.

It’d hardly be their first misstep in recent years!
