The right move

Since free agency got underway in the National Football League, there has been quite a bit of speculation about the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation. On this Wednesday morning, the team seems to have provided at least one answer. . .one that, at least on the surface, appears to be the obvious one.

Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network is reporting that the Vikings have told other teams that they are moving forward with J.J. McCarthy at quarterback, pointing out that the team has rejected multiple trade calls for their young signal caller.

The Vikings drafted McCarthy at #10 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft with the hope that he might be able to compete with Sam Darnold and, potentially, take over the job at some point in his rookie season. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn meniscus and missed the entire season.

Darnold went on to have an outstanding season for the Vikings and cashed in with a three-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks. The Vikings also lost Daniel Jones, who they claimed on waivers from the New York Giants during the season and kept on the practice squad for the second half of the year. Jones took a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

That means that, for now, the Vikings have just two quarterbacks on the roster: McCarthy and Brett Rypien. As Pelissero points out, the Vikings is planning to add a veteran quarterback at some point during the offseason. Fortunately, as things stand right now, that veteran is not going to be Aaron Rodgers, who reportedly has a crush on the Vikings and is waiting for them to call him.

(They’re not calling him.)

We’ll take a look at some of the potential options for the Vikings at the quarterback spot here shortly, but for now their #1 option at quarterback is J.J. McCarthy, which is really what most of us knew it was all along.
