Former Bengals and Steelers standout Larry Ogunjobi gets PED suspension from NFL

The former Bengal recently signed with the Bills.

Free agency is officially in full swing in the NFL, and all teams are working to improve their rosters before the draft next month.

One name resurfacing this past week was former Cincinnati Bengals standout Larry Ogunjobi, who was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers. That brought about the idea of re-signing him back to help with the defensive line issues.

Bengals fans (including myself) were unhappy to see Ogunjobi sign with the Buffalo Bills on a one-year deal, something we would have hoped to see him on in Cincinnati again.

However, the tides turned pretty quickly with that story, as Ogunjobi, along with fellow free agent signee Michael Hoecht, have both been suspended for the use of performance-enhancing drugs.

The news broke of the six-game suspension earlier this afternoon, with Bills GM Brandon Beane stating, “It’s not ideal to have two guys with that, but both guys have never had any issues off the field. It’s a tough lesson of where do you get your supplements or whatever happened,” according to ESPN’s Alaina Getzenberg.

Ogunjobi had an interesting response to the positive PED test, stating, “I take full accountability. It was a mistake. It was an accident. And I accept my punishment. Sometimes you don’t know what it is. And this is one of those cases. But I think the best thing was to just be honest. … The organization handled it masterfully. They welcomed with open arms. They understood the situation. They’ve treated me with nothing but open arms and class.”

The bottom line is this: It turned out to be a good thing that the Bengals did not bring him back, considering these circumstances. The last thing they need is a potential starting defender to miss the first month and a half of the season.
