The move is an expected one as ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday that if the Rams couldn’t find a trade partner that they would release Kupp on Wednesday which is the beginning of the new league year. Kupp was due a $7.5 million roster bonus and $5 million more in other guarantees.
For much of the last month, the Rams have been trying to find a trade partner for Kupp. The Rams wide receiver released a statement in February that the team informed him that they would work with his team to find a trade. Unfortunately, by releasing Kupp, the Rams won’t be getting any compensation in return as minimal as it was expected to be. Both Sean McVay and Les Snead spoke to the media after the NFL Combine and said that a return for the Rams wide receiver was unlikely.
A third-round pick in 2017 out of Eastern Washington, Kupp left his mark on the current era of Rams football. He arguably had the best wide receiver season of all time in 2021, earning the triple crown and then being named the Super Bowl MVP, catching the game-winning touchdown against the Bengals.
Kupp will now be free to sign with any team.
