Good for him but a bummer for the Birds.
Isaiah Rodgers is leaving the Philadelphia Eagles in NFL free agency to sign a two-year, $15 million contract that includes $8 million guaranteed with the Minnesota Vikings, according to a report from NFL insider Adam Schefter.
There was hope that the Eagles would be able to re-sign Rodgers but the 27-year-old cornerback ended up having a stronger market than anticipated. Multiple NFC East teams were said to be interested in Rodgers, so, at least he didn’t end up staying in the division.
Rodgers originally joined the Eagles in late August 2023. He missed the entire 2023 season due to a gambling suspension before returning to action in 2024. Rodgers was a valuable backup who played whenever Darius Slay or Quinyon Mitchell missed snaps. He played 421 defensive snaps (including playoffs) and only allowed a 82.1 passer rating in the regular season.
With Rodgers exiting and the Eagles reportedly designating Darius Slay as a post-June 1 cut, it remains to be seen who’ll start at cornerback opposite from Quinyon Mitchell in 2025. Perhaps a Slay reunion is more likely now that Rodgers is gone. Or maybe the Eagles are ready to move forward with Kelee Ringo taking over the starting job. Even if they’re high on Ringo, they should still probably add someone who provides competition.
Eagles fans will always be able to appreciate Rodgers’ contributions to the team’s Super Bowl LIX victory success.
