The Miami Dolphins have to address their offensive line this offseason. Should the team keep Robert Jones as bolster the line?

The start of the 2025 NFL free agency period is less than a week away. Teams all across the league are beginning to make moves to position themselves for signing players when the new league year begins at 4 p.m. Eastern on March 12, with salary cap roster cuts happening and contract extensions being signed.

The Miami Dolphins have 32 players who are scheduled to be free agents this year – including linebacker Cameron Goode and tackle Kion Smith, both of who were tendered as exclusive rights free agents on Wednesday. We continue working our way through the list of players with expiring contracts this morning with a turn to the offense.

Today’s breakdown will take a closer look at guard Robert Jones. We will provide a look back at his 2024 performance, predict what his role could be in 2025, and then provide you a chance to weigh in on what Miami should do. Will Jones be re-signed? Will the team let him walk in free agency?

2024 Review

17 games started

Jones started all 17 games at left guard for the Dolphins in 2024, his first season as a full-time starter. He struggled throughout the year, allowing five sacks (1st the team), four quarterback hits (1st), 19 hurries (2nd), and 28 pressures (2nd) (according to Pro Football Focus). PFF had his overall grade for 2024 right around average.

2025 Outlook

Jones is a veteran player who can provide solid depth for an offensive line, with the versatility to move around if needed. He could grow into a reliable starter with more time on the line in the role, but the Dolphins are looking to upgrade their guard positions for a reason. Jones might be best used as a third or fourth guard option on a roster.

Walk or Re-Sign?

Note: The franchise tag window has closed for 2025.

Re-sign. The Dolphins need to address their offensive line, especially the guard play, but they also will need depth. Jones is solid enough to warrant keeping him on the roster as a backup guard who can move into the starting lineup if needed. He knows the offensive system and, while Miami targeting guards in free agency and/or the Draft should happen, they will need someone to round out the depth chart.
