Do the Colts have their eye on the tough Texas quarterback to potentially push Anthony Richardson in training camp?
According to CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala, the Indianapolis Colts are among the league teams that recently met with Texas QB Quinn Ewers during this week’s NFL Combine:
#Texas QB Quinn Ewers tells me he had seven formal meetings here at the combine: #Jaguars, #Titans, #Jets, #Saints, #Raiders, #Colts, #Steelers
Only two – the Steelers and Raiders – did NOT put him on the whiteboard. He said they were far more focused on him as a human.

The listed 6’2,” 214 pound redshirt junior quarterback for the Longhorns completed 293 of 445 pass attempts (65.8%) for 3,472 total passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions during 14 starts in 2024—earning 2nd-Team All-SEC honors.
When in rhythm, Ewers has shown the ability to make accurate, high-level throws with demonstrated toughness in the pocket, but has struggled with consistency at times and locking onto his first reads—needing to show a better feel for progressing through them.

Overview
Ewers’ arm talent and game flashes are enticing, but he hasn’t learned to play the game with a high enough level of consistency. The tape of road wins over Alabama and Michigan over the last two seasons showed the clearest picture of Ewers’ ceiling. He spins it with a sudden release and good touch over the first two levels and makes it look easy when he finds a rhythm. He won a high percentage of his career starts but struggled to put points on the board in most big games in 2024. Ewers rarely operates as a smooth, full-field reader. He often predetermines his target and throws into coverage instead of taking what the defense is offering. A lack of escapability will require him to process quickly enough to stay ahead of NFL blitz packages. The raw talent and upside will be alluring for pro-style passing attacks, but it’s fair to wonder if he will ever be able to rise above the talent on his roster and the ability of his play-caller to create favorable terms.
Right now, he projects as a mid-round draft pick, likely initially entering the league as a projected top backup, more so than a franchise quarterback hopeful type.
However, he has the chance to ascend to eventually becoming a full-time NFL starting passer in time—with continued growth and improvement.
The Colts are looking to find legit competition at starting quarterback to push incumbent third-year projected starter Anthony Richardson in training camp. On a rookie contract, Ewers would present a cheaper option than say free agents Justin Fields or Jameis Winston; however, would he be good enough early on to make it a serious competition?
It’s a fair question of whether he’d simply be a slight upgrade to third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger at this stage of his early pro career, but of course, with more long-term upside.
