Report: Abdul Carter might need foot surgery

This news could end up having implications for the New York Giants

Penn State edge defender Abdul Carter has a stress reaction in his right foot and could face surgery, per a report late Wednesday night and might require surgery, per a report NFL inider Adam Schefter.

Since Carter is considered a potential No. 1 overall pickin the upcoming NFL Draft that could have a direct impact on the New York Giants at No. 3 overall, perhaps throwing the top of board into chaos.

“There are mixed opinions on whether he needs surgery, and we will figure that out in the near future,” Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Schefter.

Per Schefter, Carter could have surgery to have a screw inserted into the foot. That procedure would sideline him for roughly two months. He could also opt against the surgery, work out at his Pro Day and hope to convince teams he is healthy.

Rosenhaus told Schefter he still expects Carter to be the first pick in the draft.

“Either way, worst case scenario, we don’t expect this to impact where he is drafted,” Rosenhaus said. “After visiting with teams this week, I believe he’s going to be the No. 1 overall pick. “

The Tennessee Titans have the No. 1 pick and have said they would not pass on a generational talent. Does Tennessee consider Carter generational?

“Abdul’s (Carter) a very good player,” Tennessee GM Mike Borgonzi said on Tuesday. “I don’t want to go into many evaluations of the players, but like I said, there’s certainly some players at the top there that fit that description of generational talent.”

The Giants, of course, are quarterback-needy. New York’s interest in trading for veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford has been widely documented. If they don’t get Stafford from the Los Angeles Rams, though, drafting either Cam Ward of Miami or Shedeur Sanders of Colorado could be in play at No. 3.

If the Giants were interested in moving up to No. 1 might the Carter news make the Titans more amenable to a move down as a measure of protecting themselves by obtaining extra picks?

What Carter will decide and how it may or may not impact the draft is unknown. It is, though, a monkey wrench in the proceedings.
