Confirmation of the Giants’ interest in Stafford
A tremendous amount of smoke has quickly billowed out of the NFL Scouting Combine with respect to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matt Stafford.
New reporting from Dianna Russini and Tashan Reed has confirmed, at least per their sources, that the New York Giants are interested in acquiring Stafford if the Rams do indeed make him available.
The crux of the matter, as Russini reported on her podcast, is that Stafford wants a new contract, however the Rams aren’t willing to match his asking price.
Previous reporting states that the Rams have allowed Stafford’s camp to talk to other teams, with the intention of allowing Stafford to find out how other teams value him financially. Stafford is reportedly looking for a two or three-year contract worth in the neighborhood of $50 million annually. While the Rams have cap space ($44.3 million in 2025 and $95.9 million in 2026, per OverTheCap), they don’t seem to be eager to pay him $100 million over the next two years.
Russini also reported in her podcast that the Rams’ coaching staff is “very comfortable” with the idea of going forward with Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter if they aren’t able to come to an agreement with Stafford.
As things stand now, we don’t know whether the Rams have put forth an asking price for Stafford. Likewise, we don’t know if the Giants would even be willing to give Stafford the contract he’s seeking.
Giants’ GM Joe Schoen expressed a preference for adding a veteran starter to their roster to both win games in 2025 and serve as a mentor to a young quarterback.
Whether that would be Stafford would obviously hinge on the cost of acquiring Stafford and retaining his services. And if the Giants are truly interested in, and serious about, trading for Stafford, it looks like they could have some competition.
Russini and Reed also put forth the Las Vegas Raiders as another team who are both desperate for a quarterback and have shown interest in Stafford.
NBC Sports also reported Wednesday morning that Tom Brady — as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders — has approached Stafford’s camp about a a trade. The Raiders currently have the second-most salary cap space in the NFL at $99.5 million per OverTheCap, so they could more easily meet Stafford’s demands than the Giants.
