The Giants have filled their coaching vacancy
The New York Giants are hiring Iowa running back coach Ladell Betts to be their new running backs coach, per a report form Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
The Giants running backs coach position has had a turnover rate that’s rivaled Spinal Tap’s drummers. This is the fourth consecutive year that the Giants have had to fill the position, after Joel Thomas left the Giants to return to the New Orleans Saints.
If the name Ladell Betts is familiar to Giants fans, it’s likely because he was a former running back himself and was drafted out of Iowa by Washington in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Betts played for until 2010, when he retired and got into coaching and hired in 2021 to be Iowa’s running backs coach.
The Hawkeyes are known for a ground-based offense, and Kaleb Johnson [prospect profile] led the Big 10 with 1,537 rushing yards (6.4 per carry) and 21 touchdowns. Last year, Joel Thomas’ relationship with the Purdue running backs coach helped to unearth Tyrone Tracy in the 5th round.
It will be interesting to see if Betts provides any inside information on prospects like safety Sebastian Castro, or guard Connor Colby.
