Eagles promote Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator, hire new passing game coordinator

Nick Sirianni’s right-hand man is the Kellen Moore replacement.

The Philadelphia Eagles are promoting passing game coordinator/associate head coach Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator, according to an official team announcement.

The Eagles are also hiring Miami Dolphins offensive assistant Parks Frazier to be their new passing game coordinator, according to a report from NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Let’s sort through this news on a coach-by-coach basis.

KEVIN PATULLO

Earlier this month, we wrote about how Patullo was considered to be a “strong candidate” to replace Kellen Moore.

Here’s what we said at the time:

From the outside looking in, Patullo doesn’t necessarily seem like a slam dunk candidate from a merit standpoint. A few concerns:

He’s never been an offensive coordinator before and he doesn’t have extensive play-calling experience.

He’s been Sirianni’s right-hand man since arriving in Philly. And the Eagles clearly wanted Sirianni to be less involved with the offense after their 2023 collapse, hence the Moore hiring. The line between Sirianni/Patullo could be blurred, which was an issue with the Sirianni/Johnson dynamic.

The Eagles’ passing game hasn’t exactly been awesome this season! As Sheil Kapadia recently noted, they ranked 14th in passing DVOA, which was tied for their lowest ranking in any season with Hurts as the starter. And it’s not like the Eagles lack the required talent for a top 10 passing offense.

This isn’t to suggest that Patullo doesn’t stand a chance at being a good candidate. Perhaps he has a promising plan to fix some of the offensive issues from this season.

Eagles fans weren’t exactly jazzed about the prospect of a Patullo promotion. Perhaps that’s changed after the team’s Super Bowl win but these are results from a February 3 poll:

Despite previously voicing desire for coaching continuity, Jalen Hurts didn’t exactly seem thrilled about a potential Patullo promotion when asked about the possibility just a few days after the Eagles’ Super Bowl win:

The Eagles were required to interview at least two minority candidates to replace Moore but we never heard of their reported interest in those people prior to this Patullo promotion. Jeff McLane reports “there wasn’t an extensive search” for Moore’s replacement.

Patullo might end up being a good offensive coordinator. He contributed to the Eagles’ Super Bowl success at some level and he might have good ideas for the future of this offense. His close relationship with Sirianni might be a positive in terms of the head coach trusting him to call plays unlike how Sirianni reportedly meddled in the play-calling process when Brian Johnson was OC.

Patullo has much to prove, though, as the Eagles try to repeat as Super Bowl champs.

• 2024 — Miami Dolphins offensive assistant

Frazier notably overlapped with Sirianni and Patullo in Indy from 2018-2020.

Frazier actually finished the 2022 season calling plays for the Colts after Frank Reich got fired and Jeff Saturday took over as interim head coach (lol).
