The rookie CB thought they would blitz once or twice, but the game never really called for it.

The Eagles defensive performance in the Super Bowl was exceptional. One of the more notable stats for the group as a whole was their ability to get after Patrick Mahomes, sacking him six times, without Vic Fangio ever calling a blitz.

Cooper DeJean recently sat down with The Pivot podcast and was asked about the incredibly feat. The rookie DB admitted that they had a couple blitzes installed in the game plan, and practiced some, but they never had to use them. He credited the incredible pressure the guys up front were getting, and how the secondary was able to back them up.

“If you watch the game, we didn’t really have to [blitz], like those guys up front, they were doing their work. Those guys — Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, [Josh] Sweat, [Brandon Graham] was in there running around, Jalen Carter, I mean, those guys are monsters. Makes it easy for us on the backend when you’ve got guys like that up front. We don’t have to rush, we can play zone or match coverage, and let those guys go to work.”

Fangio will have to continue developing the defense this offseason, particularly if the Eagles lose guys like Josh Sweat and Milton Williams to free agency, but the DC should still be in a good place and not have to rely on blitzing too heavily in 2025 — with so many dominant players, they just don’t need to.
