NFL insider: ‘Zero’ chance the New York Giants trade No. 3 pick for Matthew Stafford

NFL insider: ‘Zero’ chance the New York Giants trade No. 3 pick for Matthew Stafford

The Giants might have interest, but not at that price

NFL insider Adam Schefter on Thursday poured freezing cold water on the assertion by Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports that the New York Giants might offer the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft in exchange for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

“Let me be very clear: that pick is not in the conversation if Matthew Stafford and the Rams can’t get a deal worked out — and if Matthew Stafford becomes available and all of a sudden the Giants surface as a contender,” Schefter told Pat Leonard on the ‘Talkin’ Ball’ podcast. “If all those things happen … there is no way in hell that the Giants are giving up the third overall pick for Matthew Stafford. Zero. zero.”

Cowherd had said that “the Matt Stafford to the Giants stuff is real,” and that the Rams wanted the Giants’ No. 3 pick plus other draft assets.

Here is the view I expressed Thursday about the Stafford rumor:

“I can’t see the Giants giving up the No. 3 overall pick AND signing a 37-year-old quarterback to a rich contract extension. That would qualify as the kind of ‘Hail Mary’ Schoen promised at the end of the season that he would not use in an effort to swing for a short-term fix that might help him keep his job.”

I can see the Giants making a short-term play for Stafford if the price is right, and if the Rams were to actually get serious about trading him. I discussed some of my thoughts on that here:

Schefter told Leonard that the Rams’ “first priority, their interest” is in re-signing Stafford, and that he believes that it where Stafford wants to play.

If the two sides can’t get a deal done, it would not surprise at all for the Giants to make a run at the 37-year-old quarterback.
