Matthew Stafford is ‘the big domino’ at quarterback according to national reporter
Until the Los Angeles Rams and Matthew Stafford sign the dotted line on a new contract extension, there is going to be a lot of speculation on the future of the quarterback. While the most likely scenario seems to be that Stafford is back in Los Angeles in 2025, it’s also not a guarantee. An agreement still needs to happen that makes sense for both sides and it’s hard to know exactly what that looks like.
it’s not getting enough attention that Stafford appears way more likely than not gone. Also I’d be stunned if they got a top-5 pick for him https://t.co/Nd6B8mPLPG

Albert Breer of the MMQB listed his 10 storylines to watch heading into the 2025 offseason. One of those storylines revolved around the Rams with Breer saying, “I think Matthew Stafford is the big domino in this year’s quarterback market.” Breer continued,
“That, to be clear, doesn’t mean he’s going to be available in March. It does mean that teams are keeping an eye on what happens with Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams, in mapping out their plans…Two things, I think, will determine how this goes. The first will be how much he wants. The second will be whether he’s willing to commit to playing for just another year. The Rams have built a nice young core. As that core starts to come of age, what the team would like to avoid is landing in some sort of desperate situation at the most important position on the field. So if Stafford wants a big contract adjustment, and someone is offering a first-round pick, and he’s not sure if he can commit to 2026 … that’s where I could see this getting interesting.”
The Rams and Stafford would like to get this done sooner rather than later. This isn’t going to be a situation that drags on into training camp like it did last year. Both sides are going to want to get this done around the new league year which is March 12.
Again, until the Rams and Stafford put pen to paper and a new contract is official this is going to be a situation to monitor. Stafford showed at times last year that he can still perform at a top-five level on any given week. For teams like the Minnesota Vikings or even the New York Giants to an extent who are looking to make a deep run or save their jobs, the thought of Stafford is intriguing. At the end of the day, the Rams will be looking to keep Stafford while he would certainly like to remain in Los Angeles. Still, this is the business side of football and things don’t always work out that way.
