Eagles vs. Chiefs Super Bowl: 40 winners, 6 losers, and 3 IDKs

Not only did the Philadelphia Eagles win a second Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The Birds made it look incredibly easily by absolutely DESTROYING the Kansas City Chiefs, who had an unprecedented threepeat at stake, in Super Bowl LIX.

There are infinite things to say about this win and this team.

It’s time to hand out some winners, losers, and IDKs from an unforgettable night.

For even more Eagles analysis, check out my appearance onThe Ringer’s Philly Special postgame podcast with Sheil Kapadia (and Cliffy Two Socks):

WINNERS

JALEN HURTS

The Eagles’ second-ever Super Bowl MVP.

The numbers: 17/22 (77.3% completion), 221 yards (10.0 average), 2 TD, 1 INT, 119.7 passer rating … 11 carries, 72 yards, 1 TD.

Hurts continues to play his best football when the lights are the brightest. He was mostly excellent in the Super Bowl two years ago. He was awesome in this year’s NFC Championship Game win over the Washington Commanders. He was nearly flawless in this Super Bowl win.

The moment is never too big for Hurts. He’s composed and in complete control. That much shouldn’t be taken for granted. There are plenty of quarterbacks who put up great regular season numbers and then wilt in the playoffs. You can set your watch to them disappointing in the postseason. The opposite is true for Hurts, who absolutely rises to the occasion.

Hurts made some gorgeous throws in this game, including the dagger to DeVonta Smith. One of his best plays didn’t even count due to a very tacky offensive pass interference call on A.J. Brown.

Leading up to this game, there was a lot of talk about Mahomes’ ability to rip off back-breaking runs. The Eagles experienced one of those in their Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs. This time around, however, it was Hurts who looked Mahomesian in that regard. He stepped up against pressure and took off running for some crucial first down conversions. He even had a run where he tiptoed along the sideline like Mahomes often does.

Hurts being the better quarterback in two Super Bowl matchups against Mahomes is pretty special stuff. Just a shame he only got one win from those two.

Another Hurts thing I’ve been thinking about: it’s cool how Eagles fans will get to enjoy the 26-year-old as their franchise quarterback for years to come. Nick Foles winning Super Bowl MVP was incredibly special but he wasn’t the team’s starter and he was gone after the 2018 season.

At the very least, Hurts is immortalized for bringing one Super Bowl title to Philly. But who’s to say he can’t lead them to even more?

After all, he’s a winner.

VIC FANGIO

Fangio grew up as an Eagles fan and he came to Philly to help deliver a Super Bowl title. He did just that.

The Eagles’ defensive coordinator hardly could’ve orchestrated a more dominant performance. Barring two meaningless garbage time touchdowns, his unit absolutely shut down Mahomes and Andy Reid’s offense.

The Chiefs ran 20 plays in the first half. Those resulted in 13 YARDS and seven Eagles points thanks to Cooper DeJean’s pick-six.

If Super Bowl MVP could go to a coach, Fangio easily would’ve taken home the award.

Historical excellence:

Somehow, two defensive coordinators got more votes for Assistant Coach of the Year than Fangio did.

Lol.

Legend.

HOWIE ROSEMAN

Everyone who predicted the Eagles to win this game cited them being “the better team.” Roseman built this loaded roster.

Roseman has now built two Super Bowl winners with different head coaches and different quarterbacks.

The 49-year-old already has a case to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He very well might be able to build even more Super Bowl winners.

He’s not only the best general manager in the NFL … he’s the best general manager in sports.

GM for life.

JEFFREY LURIE

The best owner in Philadelphia sports history.

Roseman’s ultimate success isn’t made possible with a less patient owner.

NICK SIRIANNI

I’m sorry I doubted you, Nick. I absolutely thought you should’ve been fired last year and I struggled to see how you gave the Eagles an edge. But the results speak loudest with you doing nothing but leading the team to wins.

Sirianni going from entering this season with his back against the wall to winning the Super Bowl is a pretty wild turnaround. Has to feel really good for him. He’s earned it.

The way Sirianni set the tone in this Super Bowl was really important. Going for it on 4th-and-2 at midfield ultimately didn’t work out with A.J. Brown getting called for a BS penalty. But the message was still sent that the Eagles weren’t playing scared. They were out to dominate from the jump.

JOSH SWEAT

Sweat had a strong case for Super Bowl MVP and he even received multiple votes for the award.

He filled up the box score with six tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two TFLs. Sweat also created Zack Baun’s diving interception by pressuring Mahomes into a bad throw. He was the star of a pass rush unit that absolutely wrecked the Chiefs’ offensive attack.

It’s quite possible that this was Sweat’s last game with the Eagles. He’ll be a free agent next month and he’ll likely be looking to cash in after effectively agreeing to pay cut last year.

Speaking of, what a turnaround for him. Sweat only produced one sack in 13 games spanning from Week 11 in 2023 to Week 3 in 2024. He even went a bit cold late in 2024 with zero sacks in five games before the Super Bowl.

But he was a monster against the Chiefs. Good for him.

MILTON WILLIAMS

Like Sweat, Williams will be a free agent next month. If Sunday night was his last game in Philly, well, he sure finished his Eagles career on a high note.

Williams logged two TFLs and two sacks, including a strip-sack on Mahomes to kill any remaining hope for the Chiefs and instead allow the Eagles to go up 40 to 6. Great night for the Milt-heads.

Williams had half of a sack in the entire 2023 season. He played better than that number would indicate but he clearly hit a new gear in 2024. Williams deserves a big pay day.

COOPER DEJEAN

What a moment for the rookie cornerback to finally nab his first career interception.

I’ll always think back to DeJean’s pick six as the moment I really started to feel like the Eagles might actually win Super Bowl LIX.

The Eagles’ first-ever Super Bowl interception being this play … a pick by DeJean on his birthday … pretty cool.

Here’s how it happened:

DeJean also had three punt returns result in 27 yards gained.

He was also in the Super Bowl MVP conversation.

ZACK BAUN

What an unreal season by this dude. He made at least one huge play every single week.

In this game, it was his diving interception.

Baun entered this year with one interception and zero forced fumbles in 64 games.

Playing for the Eagles, he had three interceptions and six forced fumbles in 20 games.

I have a hard time believing the Eagles are going to let a first-team All-Pro who received votes for Defensive Player of the Year walk out the door.

DEVONTA SMITH

While the DeJean pick was when I believed the Eagles might actually win, the DeVonta dagger was when I felt comfortable to officially rule out a Chiefs comeback. They simply were not losing after that.

DeVonta was the Eagles’ leading receiver with five targets resulting in four catches, 69 yards, and one touchdown.

DeVonta is now one of five players to win a Heisman Trophy, a college football national championship, and a Super Bowl. The others: Reggie Bush, Charles Woodson, Marcus Allen, and Tony Dorsett.

A.J. BROWN

Three catches, 43 yards, one touchdown.

It would not have felt right if Brown never won a Super Bowl. He’s too good to not have a title to his name.

SAQUON BARKLEY

The Chiefs were clearly hellbent on stopping Barkley … and they limited him to just 57 rushing yards on 25 carries (2.3 average). Success!

Except … the Chiefs focusing on Barkley opened up opportunities for Hurts and the passing attack.

Speaking of, Barkley had a team-high seven targets result in six catches for 40 yards. So, that’s 97 yards from scrimmage. Math.

Barkley also did a nice job picking up blitzers in pass protection. One such example was apparent on Hurts’ near-touchdown throw to Jahan Dotson.

All told, it wasn’t Barkley’s best game. But the birthday boy obviously did a lot of the heavy lifting to get the Eagles to the Super Bowl. And he still rushed for enough yards to set the new single-season rushing record (including playoffs) with 2,504.

After winning just one playoff game in six seasons with the Giants, Barkley is now a Super Bowl champion.

JAHAN DOTSON

4D chess: the Eagles were actually just saving Dotson for the Super Bowl all along!

He almost had the game’s first touchdown (really bad beat for any sickos who bet Dotson as the first TD) before review showed him one yard short of the goal line.

Dotson’s three targets resulted in two catches for 42 yards, his highest total from any game started by Jalen Hurts this season.

I wonder if Hurts might be more comfortable with throwing to Dotson more often next season after having an entire offseason to build chemistry.

DALLAS GOEDERT

Goedert’s two targets resulted in 27 yards.

He finished the playoffs with 20 targets for 17 receptions, 215 yards (12.6 yards per reception), and 1 TD. Very efficient.

Will be interesting to see what the future holds for him. It was a disappointing regular season with injuries limiting him to 10 games and his second-lowest yardage total of his career. But his postseason was good.

KELLEN MOORE

Moore was on a heater in his final two games as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. Hurts deserves a ton of credit for playing well but Moore also aided the QB’s success.

Even though the New Orleans Saints’ head coaching job doesn’t seem super desirable, can’t fault him for taking it. You never know what your stock is going to look like in one year’s time (see: Bobby Slowik going from hot HC candidate to being fired).

Moore earned his opportunity.

JORDAN MAILATA, LANDON DICKERSON, CAM JURGENS, MEKHI BECTON, LANE JOHNSON

The Eagles having an elite offensive line was a big reason why they won the Super Bowl LII. And it was a big reason why they won Super Bowl LIX.

Johnson was the best player on both of those lines. That much needs to be remembered when it comes to his Pro Football Hall of Fame candidacy.

Hurts had some awesome pockets to work with.

EAGLES ASSISTANT COACHES

Plenty of credit to go around but I’ll lump them into one here.

We already know Eagles run game coordinator/offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is awesome at what he does.

Eagles defensive passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach Christian Parker is viewed as a future DC in the NFL. Look at the success of the Eagles’ cornerbacks this season.

Eagles senior defensive assistant/defensive line coach Clint Hurtt oversaw the growth of talented young defensive linemen on this team.

Eagles defensive ends/outside linebackers coach Jeremiah Washburn oversaw awesome development from Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt.

Eagles linebackers coach Bobby King oversaw career years for Baun and Nakobe Dean.

The Eagles’ head coach and coordinators get most of the recognition but let’s not forget about the assistants as well.

JAKE ELLIOTT

Elliott struggled this season but he did not struggle in the Super Bowl. He was 4/4 on field goal makes from 48, 29, 48, and 50. And three of those kicks were made more difficult by pre-snap penalties that knocked him back five yards each time. Elliott was also 4/4 on extra points.

Elliott wasn’t listed on the injury report this year but apparently he may have been dealing with something that hampered him:

A healthier Elliott could rebound in 2025.

BRANDON GRAHAM

Brandon Graham has two Super Bowl rings.

Earl Thomas has one Super Bowl ring.

BG > Earl Thomas confirmed.

So awesome that Graham is a two-time Super Bowl champ.

And it wasn’t like he took ceremonial snaps. He made an impact in this game by drawing a holding penalty that knocked the Chiefs back to 2nd-and-14. A few plays later, the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs and the Eagles hit the DeVonta dagger to go up 34 to 0.

I certainly won’t complain if BG wants to keep playing; he can help this team. But it would be a great time for him to go out on top.

He is Mr. Eagle.

JALYX HUNT

A few years ago, he was a safety at Cornell.

Last year, he was playing for Houston Christian.

Now he’s a Super Bowl champion after logging half a sack in the biggest game of his career. (And breaking out a nice Trent Cole celebration tribute!)

What an ascension for Hunt, who could potentially take an even bigger leap in Year 2.

JALEN CARTER

Carter didn’t light up the box score; he had two QB hits but zero tackles.

Of course, his impact went beyond the stats. He often drew extra attention, which helped his fellow defensive linemen generate pressure.

He also drew a holding penalty … for just the second time this season, somehow.

It bears remembering that the Eagles might not make it to this game if Carter doesn’t absolutely step up and take over late against the Los Angeles Rams. That was their most vulnerable moment in the entire playoffs.

NOLAN SMITH

Smith got banged up in this game but he seems to be OK. He had two QB hits and a crushing hit on a pulling Trey Smith, who’s a really good guard. Smith injured Elgton Jenkins on a similar kind of effort in the Wild Card round. He’s a beast who offensive linemen certainly can’t love playing against.

JORDAN DAVIS

Jordan Davis, pass rushing specialist?!

He finished with two sacks in his final two games after having just one regular season sack.

MORO OJOMO

Ojomo generated three pressures and one defensive stop. He’s been a really nice rotational defensive tackle. If the Eagles end up letting Williams walk, Ojomo could be in line to step up in his place.

DARIUS SLAY

No big plays but he played lock down defense. Slay was targeted one and allowed one catch for five yards. That’s it.

Slay is finally a Super Bowl champion after 12 seasons. I wonder if the 34-year-old will hang ‘em up after this one. Even if he doesn’t retire, he might not be back with the Eagles.

QUINYON MITCHELL

Outside of allowing a garbage-time touchdown, Mitchell also played lock down defense. Awesome rookie season.

C.J. GARDNER-JOHNSON

The Eagles have never not made the Super Bowl with CJGJ on their roster.

ISAIAH RODGERS

Rodgers was on the field for the Chiefs’ first third down in a dime package. He had a chance to pick off Mahomes but ended up with the PBU instead.

Rodgers is a Super Bowl champion after missing the entirety of 2023 due to a suspension. Not a bad way to return to the league.

AVONTE MADDOX

Maddox had to enter the game with DeJean briefly getting banged up.

Maddox has typically been a liability whenever he’s been on the field this season. But he came up HUGE with a pass breakup for a turnover on downs to allow the Eagles go up 34 to 0 just one play later.

Cool redemption moment.

Maddox also recovered the Chiefs’ first of two late onside kick attempts.

OREN BURKS

Burks had a really nice postseason; he stepped up in Nakobe Dean’s absence. The Eagles have had much worse starting linebackers than what Burks gave them as a third linebacker.

Also cool for Burks that he got a win over the Chiefs after getting picked on by them on the San Francisco 49ers last year.

TYLER STEEN

Steen had to play a little bit when Becton got hurt in the second quarter. He wasn’t an obvious weak point when he had to play.

KENNY PICKETT

Pickett grew up as an Eagles fan and he got to throw a pass for his favorite team in the Super Bowl. It was incomplete, but, who cares? He’s a Super Bowl champ.

The Eagles aren’t necessarily able to rest their starters in Week 18 and gear up for the playoffs if Pickett doesn’t beat the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.

BRADEN MANN

Arryn Siposs was a disaster in the Eagles’ last Super Bowl appearance. Maybe they win that game if they have Mann instead? Mann’s first punt forced the Chiefs to take over at their own 12-yard line and his second went out of bounds at the six-yard line.

JAMES BRADBERRY

Bradberry spent the entire 2024 season on injured reserve.

While he clearly struggled in 2023, he was pretty fantastic in 2022.

He’s now a Super Bowl champion.

DARIAN KINNARD

Actually, there WAS a threepeat on Sunday night.

It involved Kinnard winning the Super Bowl with the Eagles after winning the last two with the Chiefs.

He did not log any snaps in those games but, hey, he gets a third ring all the same!

Three rings despite just three career games played.

EAGLES FANS

Not one but TWO Super Bowl wins?! What a spoiled bunch!

Seriously, though, I never thought I’d see the Eagles even win one. It’s unreal that they have two.

It’s even more unreal that they won their second in incredibly easy fashion. Like, I used to play as the Eagles in the Super Bowl in Madden to see a result like that.

LOSERS

PATRICK MAHOMES

This has to be one of the most hollow stat lines of all time:

21/32, 257 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT, 95.4 passer rating.

Nice garbage-time stat padding, Patty.

JONATHAN GANNON

Man, the Eagles’ defensive performance was so pathetic in Super Bowl LVII.

We clearly saw the difference a great DC can make.

THE SODFATHER

Interesting how the Eagles’ pass rush looked a lot better than it did two years ago when those players had to play on an incredibly slippery field!

Almost like good footing matters.

TOM DONAHOE

https://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2021/4/30/22413462/eagles-howie-roseman-tom-donahoe-nfl-draft-2021-philadelphia-milton-williams-defensive-tackle-dt

THE DALLAS COWBOYS

Disastrous season for Cowboys fans.

JOHN MARA

So many sleepless nights.

I DON’T KNOWS

BRYCE HUFF

The good news is he’s a Super Bowl champion.

The bad news is he was a healthy scratch as the fifth edge rusher.

Is Huff already a lost cause or might he be able to actually help the Eagles out in 2025?

RICK LOVATO

Lovato joins Lane, BG, and Elliott as the Eagles’ only two-time Super Bowl champs.

But might this be his last game with the Birds? He’s a free agent and there were some bad snaps this season. Lovato was also called for two false starts on Sunday night.

BRANDON LEE GOWTON

On one hand, I picked the Chiefs to win. Bad job by me.

On the other hand, I did say the Eagles winning in a blowout was more likely than them winning close:

Even though I’m taking the Chiefs to win, I do think the possibility of the Eagles winning this game comfortably has gone under-discussed.

Look, I’m just happy Philadelphia is happy.

Thanks for being here and making BGN a special place.

See you at the parade!
