It really happened, and it happened like that
What if I told you the following things were going to happen in the Super Bowl. Not just a few of these things, or most of these things, but all of these things:
- For only the third time this season, Saquon Barkley’s rushing yards + the Eagles score would be less than 100
- For the only the fourth time this season Saquon Barkley would have less than 100 yards from scrimmage
- The only player with more than 100 receiving yards would be a Chief
- Xavier Worthy would score two touchdowns
- Kenny Pickett would be in for multiple possessions, and go for it on fourth down
- The Eagles would go 0-for on fourth down
- Travis Kelce would outgain Dallas Goedert
- Patrick Mahomes would throw for more touchdowns and more yards than Jalen Hurts
- Quinyon Mitchell would get scored on
- The Chiefs would hold Saquon Barkley to 2.3 yards per carry
- Dallas Goedert would have just 27 yards
- AJ Brown would have just 43 yards
- AJ Brown and Nick Sirianni would jaw at each other on the sideline
- Jalen Hurts would throw for just 221 yards, his 8th most this season
- The Eagles would commit more penalties than the Chiefs
- The Eagles would convert just 25% of their third downs
This is an ingredients list for a terrible, humiliating, what-the-hell-did-I-just-watch loss. And it was. For the Chiefs.
It was surreal. The Super Bowl was expected to be a close game. Instead the Eagles eviscerated the Chiefs; this was over at halftime, and in a way that we wouldn’t have expected. 24 points for the Eagles to 23 yards for the Chiefs? GTFO.
And that only makes it sweeter. The 2017 team was life changing. Forever the Eagles were a Super Bowl winner. They say every title is different, and this was. It had a different kind of gratification. For the players a vindication after a heartbreaking loss two years ago. For us fans, watching them pulverize a team that was on the cusp of having a strong claim to the greatest dynasty in football was a surreal and absurd experience. Oh the best team in the league showed up on Sunday. They wore green.
Let’s do it again next year?
