The Linc – Super Bowl win could take Nick Sirianni from one of the lowest-paid NFL head coaches to one of the highest

The Linc – Super Bowl win could take Nick Sirianni from one of the lowest-paid NFL head coaches to one of the highest

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 2/9/25.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

Nick Sirianni in line for huge payday if Eagles win Super Bowl – ESPN
With Nick Sirianni headed into the final year of his contract in 2025, a victory in Super Bowl LIX would be worth millions to the Philadelphia Eagles head coach. A victory Sunday would be Sirianni’s final validation and the ultimate leverage in his discussions for a new deal that are expected to follow the game. A new contract for Sirianni is the last thing that the fourth-year coach and the Eagles will be thinking about Sunday, with so much on the line. But it is something that both sides — Sirianni and the Eagles organization — will need to address after Sunday’s game. Either way, Sirianni will be in line for an extension. But it is important to note that rookie head coaches have reset the coaching salary structure this offseason, with deals ranging from $10 million to $13 million per season, which the Chicago Bears awarded to new head coach Ben Johnson. If Sirianni leads the Eagles to a Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs, his asking price would be expected to go up — and he could argue that he is worth as much as any rookie head coach whose salary dwarfs his. Sirianni makes $7 million per season and is one of the lowest-paid NFL head coaches. He signed a five-year, $35 million deal in January 2021 that is set to expire after the 2025 season.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni’s contract expires after 2025 – PFT
For the Eagles, is there similar urgency? Jay Glazer’s Week 18 Sunday Splash! report regarding teams being interested in trading for a current coach was about O’Connell, not Sirianni. If other teams regard the Eagles’ recent success as the product of an All-Star lineup of talent compiled by G.M. Howie Roseman and not Sirianni’s game plans or in-game decision-making, would there be a land rush of franchises throwing blank checks at him like beads on Bourbon Street? If Sirianni would choose to walk away from the best roster in football after 2025, coaching candidates would line up out the door for the chance to take his place. Sirianni could end up with a lesser team, and a different coach could end up with his team. So even though Schefter’s article seems to suggest that, if the Eagles win, Lurie had better pay up or risk losing Sirianni after next season, it seems that the Eagles are far less concerned about that outcome than the Vikings were about seeing O’Connell possibly exit.

Super Bowl preview: 11 final thoughts ahead of Eagles vs. Chiefs – BGN
3 – Nick Sirianni must learn from his last Super Bowl appearance. You don’t beat Mahomes by punting the ball and kicking field goals. You just don’t. Sirianni’s aggressiveness on 4th-and-5 in the NFC Championship Game was a huge turning point for the Eagles. The Eagles won Super Bowl LII in no small part by running Philly Special on fourth down and later converting a 4th-and-1 in the fourth quarter. They lost Super Bowl LVII in no small part by Sirianni punting on 4th-and-3 from the Eagles’ own territory. Go down swinging. Do not play scared.

Analytics predicts Super Bowl winner between Chiefs and Eagles – SB Nation
Edge: Eagles – Much like last year, when the San Francisco 49ers were second in DVOA while the Chiefs were 5th, the data is doubting the Patrick Mahomes-led, two-time champions. As we noted in the separate pieces, there is a bit of a best vs best when Kansas City’s offense faces Philadelphia’s defense but how Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts can control the clock for the Eagles offense versus Chris Jones and the Chiefs defense could decide the outcome.

Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl LIX predictions from Arrowhead Pride – Arrowhead Pride
Pete Sweeney: Two years after their first championship matchup in Super Bowl LVII, I think both defenses have steadily improved, and I expect a lower-scoring game than the first time around. Patrick Mahomes has been talking about this game since shortly after last year’s Super Bowl. I think Mahomes outplays Jalen Hurts in the biggest spot imaginable, willing the Chiefs to NFL immortality. Chiefs 28, Eagles 24.

10 reasons the Philadelphia Eagles will beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX – PhillyVoice
3) Jalen Hurts won’t have to win this game on his own. In the Eagles’ loss in the Super Bowl two years ago, Hurts was probably the best player on the field. Yes, he had a fumble returned by the Chiefs defense for a TD, but he was also 27-for-38 for 304 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs, and a passer rating of 103.4. He also ran 15 times for 70 yards and 3 TDs. Eagles running backs combined for 17 carries for 45 yards in that game, and the Birds’ defense didn’t show up. Hurts nearly carried the Eagles to a Super Bowl anyway. If Hurts is anywhere near as good on Sunday as he was in that game, the Eagles will win in a blowout. But that’s not really what they need from him this time around. Hurts has gone nine straight games without throwing an INT, and he has thrown just one INT in his last 15 games. If he continues to protect the football like he has for the last four months while making the plays that are there, the rest of the Eagles’ roster can carry him instead of the other way around.

Super Bowl LIX Preview – KC vs PHI – Iggles Blitz
This all sounds very favorable to the Eagles. KC does have a good defense. They were 4th in points allowed and 8th in red zone defense. Chris Jones can be a game-wrecker up front. The problem with stopping him is that Jones lines up all over. He plays DE and DT and on both sides. That makes it challenging to gameplan for him. George Karlaftis led the team with 8 sacks and 28 QB hits. The Eagles OTs should be able to limit him most of the time. MLB Nick Bolton is the team’s leading tackler and remains a good playmaker. Trent McDuffie is the key DB. He can play in the slot or outside. They might have him shadown AJ. McDuffie can cover, but would have a size disadvantage in that matchup. The Eagles must handle KC blitzes well. Hurts has to see them and get the ball out quickly. The skill players must do their part. The OL must identify rushers and be ready for them. The player who worries me is Mekhi Becton. He doesn’t always do a good job of reading blitzes and getting the right rusher. The extra week should help him get ready.

Super Bowl 59 Best Bets: Back A.J. Brown – PFF
A.J. Brown Over 70.5 Receiving Yards. After struggling to be a focal point of the Eagles’ offense for several weeks, Brown returned to his typical productive self in the NFC Championship game with eight targets and 96 yards. As we discussed in that week’s article, he was in a perfect position for a big game, as the Commanders play man coverage at one of the higher rates in the league. All season, the Eagles stud receiver has dominated those looks, both in terms of volume and efficiency. Luckily for Brown, the Chiefs are one of the few teams that play man at a higher rate. Although they have better cornerbacks than Washington, namely Trent McDuffie, I anticipate that Brown will be able to win those one-on-one reps and get open frequently. Brown should be a pinnacle of the Eagles’ game plan against a man-heavy Chiefs defense. Despite his impressive last game, this line is still a major discount from where you might expect it to be based on much of his regular-season performance. Back him to clear his median projection in the Super Bowl.

A look at 10 Eagles postseason records and milestones within reach – NBCSP
4. Nolan Smith within reach of the top. Nolan Smith has 4.0 sacks this postseason, two shy of the single-season playoff record of 6.0 shared by former Eagle Richard Dent in 1985, Michael McCrary in 2000 and LaMarr Woodley in 2008. Smith needs 1 ½ sacks to break Brandon Graham’s Eagles career record of 5 ½ (also pending whatever B.G. does). Smith’s 4.0 sacks this postseason are already an Eagles single-season record. A sack Sunday would make Smith the first player in NFL history with a sack in four consecutive games in the same postseason.

Super Bowl prediction: Will an Eagles season from Brazil to Bourbon Street finish with a parade on Broad Street? – PHLY
Sirianni needs to be an aggressive decision-maker, too. I didn’t like that 4th-and-3 punt against the Chiefs two years ago, and I like it less today. The Eagles were 2 for 2 on fourth downs in that game, including a 28-yard run by Hurts on a 4th-and-5 from the Chiefs 44-yard line. Mahomes is that good; I’m not giving him the ball unless it’s an obvious punting situation. Both teams will move the ball. This won’t be a blowout — there’s a reason why it’s a one-point line. I’m expecting this to come down to the fourth quarter. The key will be third-down defense in scoring territory. The Eagles will make those four-point plays on defense to limit the Chiefs to field goals. The Chiefs push back on an Eagles lead again before missing a late field goal to preserve an Eagles lead. The ball goes back to the Eagles with the clock ticking down. The Eagles get the one first down they need to seal the game. At that point, the party starts on Broad Street. The Eagles win their second Super Bowl. Eagles 28, Chiefs 27

Thanks to the Eagles, 102-year-old Eloise Brown is going to the Super Bowl: “I can’t believe it, a little old lady like me” – Inquirer
On Tuesday afternoon, Eloise Brown got an unexpected zoom call. It was the Eagles’ team president, Don Smolenski. “I’m calling from New Orleans,” Smolenski said. “I have a question to ask you. Would you like to come and join us and watch us on Sunday?” “Me?” Eloise replied. “Yes,” Smolenski answered. The 102-year-old fan was speechless. “Oh my,” she said with a big smile.

Eagles 2024 Super Bowl HYPE VIDEO – PE.com
It all comes down to this. The Hype Video for Super Bowl LIX narrated by Bradley Cooper brings all the fire just ahead of the big game.

Survey results: Fans are taking the Eagles and the ‘over’ for Sunday’s Super Bowl; AP & DQ blanked in awards voting – Hogs Haven
The results indicate that fans generally expect a close game, with just under half of all survey respondents expecting Kansas City to cover, while just a shade over half pick the Eagles +1.5 points. Fans are a bit more confident about the score, with 56% taking the over. During the regular season, the Eagles had the 7th highest scoring offense at 27.2 points per game, while the Chiefs were ranked 15th at 22.6 ppg. Defensively, Philly ranked 2nd and Kansas City 4th at 17.8 and 19.2 ppg, respectively.

3 smart trades the Cowboys could make without giving their top draft capital – Blogging The Boys
Trade pick 174 for Jadeveon Clowney. Again, do not expect to see Dallas in the Myles Garrett Sweepstakes. It’s not going to happen. That said, the Cowboys need help at defensive end. DeMarcus Lawrence went down early with a season-ending injury, and his future with the team is one of the least talked about unknowns of the offseason. Sam Williams would be heavily counted on in 2024, but an ACL injury derailed what might’ve been a breakout season. Jadeveon Clowney fits a few bullet points for the Cowboys.

Examining futures of Cowboys’ Micah Parsons, Raiders’ Maxx Crosby, other pass rushers in potentially wild 2025 offseason – NFL.com
Micah Parsons, Dallas Cowboys: Normally open with his opinions, the Cowboys’ 25-year-old superstar hasn’t said much of anything about the team’s promotion of Brian Schottenheimer after a surprise parting of ways with head coach Mike McCarthy — a move Parsons called “devastating.” While there have been no trade talks, sources say there have at least been some internal discussions about whether to pay Parsons or trade him for a king’s ransom. If the Cowboys are willing to listen, they may get it. Cowboys COO Stephen Jones told NFL.com in December that the team will study the wisdom of having so much money invested in so few players, but added: “I can’t imagine there’s a scenario where he’s not wearing a star on his helmet.” Parsons is due about $24 million on the fifth-year option year on his rookie contract in 2025.

NFL Draft rumors: Tennessee Titans ‘could’ trade No. 1 overall pick – Big Blue View
The Tennessee Titans could be open to trading out of the No. 1 spot in the 2025 NFL Draft, according to reporting from ESPN’s Dan Graziano. That, of course, should get the attention of the quarterback-needy New York Giants, who own the No. 3 overall pick.
