Sean McVay is losing another assistant coach to a promotion with another team
Sean McVay’s massive coaching tree grew another branch on Monday, as the Houston Texans are hiring Rams tight ends coach Nick Caley to be their new offensive coordinator. Caley will replace Bobby Slowik, who was fired after two seasons at the helm despite the Texans making the playoffs in both years.
Caley, who reportedly turned down a $3 million offer from the Patriots last year and had also interviewed with the New York Jets, is just the latest McVay offensive or defensive disciple to gain a significant coaching position in the NFL.
The #Texans are hiring #Rams TEs coach and pass game coordinator Nick Caley as their new OC, as CJ Stroud and the Houston offense get a new play-caller, per me and @TomPelissero.

Once a longtime assistant of Bill Belichick, Caley now goes from Matthew Stafford to C.J. Stroud. Among other coordinators in the NFL with experience under McVay, there are head coaches Kevin O’Connell, Zac Taylor, Liam Coen, and Matt LaFleur, as well as offensive coordinators Wes Phillips and Zac Robinson, not to mention defensive minded coaches like Raheem Morris.
The Rams now must find a new tight ends coach. Most likely, it will be someone fastracked for another promotion.
