Giants have an opening at right guard
As the New York Giants look to improve their offensive line for the 2025 season, one name that could be on their radar is Will Fries, the talented right guard currently set to hit free agency. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), the Giants are a potential landing spot for the 27-year-old.
PFF’s Zoltan Buday writes:
Fries has steadily improved over his four seasons in Indianapolis, earning a higher PFF overall grade each year. Though an injury cut his 2024 season short, he showed significant progress early on. Over the first five weeks, his 86.9 PFF overall grade would have ranked third among guards if he had played enough snaps to qualify, while his 84.9 PFF run-blocking grade was among the best at the position.
Fries was a seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2021. He has started 31 of the 41 regular-season games in which he has played, and has almost exclusively been at right guard.
Coincidentally, the one obvious opening on the Giants’ offensive line is at right guard, where 2024 starter Greg Van Roten is an unrestricted free agent.
“Four of the five [starting offensive linemen] we like,” GM Joe Schoen said Friday on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “The right guard is obviously a position that we’re going to have to look to upgrade with Greg Van Roten being a free agent. We either bring him back or look in free agency or there’s some other guys on the roster that can compete for that as well.”
Before his season-ending tibia injury in Week 5 against Jacksonville, Fries was performing at a high level for theColts. He earned a top-10 pass-blocking grade (74.9) from PFF and ranked fourth in run-blocking (84.9), showing he could be a solid addition to any offensive line.
PFF is projecting that Fries will sign a four-year deal worth $57.25 million, which could make him an expensive addition for the Giants. However, with more than $43 million in cap space and the ability to clear more room if necessary, the Giants have the flexibility to make a move like this.
