Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter dominate selections
A clear quarterback consensus for the New York Giants has emerged in early 2025 NFL mock drafts. Shedeur Sanders of Colorado is the choice in 15 of the 36 mocks in this week’s mock draft tracker, or 41.7%.
That consensus might have a lot to do with the fact that 73% of mock drafters tracked by the NFL Mock Draft Database believe Miami quarterback Cam Ward will go No. 1 overall to the Tennessee Titans. That, of course, would mean Sanders would have to be the option if the Giants want a quarterback at No. 3.
Ward was the selection in six of the 36 mock drafts, 16.7%.
Those who have the Giants not going for a quarterback at No. 3 seem overwhelmingly in favor of the Giants selecting Colorado cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter. Ten of the 36 mock drafts (27.8%) have the Giants selecting the Heisman Trophy winner.
Below, some of the comments made by mock drafters to coincide with their selections.
Josh Edwards of CBS Sports on selecting Sanders:
The Giants are desperate for a quarterback addition. They probably would take whichever option was left over. In this case, Shedeur Sanders returns to the Big Apple where he attended the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Sanders is a prospect who has dealt with pressure his whole life and has experience captaining a rebuild.
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY on his choice of Sanders for the Giants:
Right now, he’s No. 2 on the power rankings of Sanders family members creating early offseason buzz. But with Deion yet to have a formal interview scheduled for the Dallas Cowboys’ coaching vacancy – and no real path for getting Shedeur to Jerry Jones and Co. – let’s table that notion and send the signal-caller to a more reasonable NFC East landing spot. In keeping coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, Giants co-owner John Mara said finding a quarterback was the “number one issue” facing the franchise. Whether motivated purely by survival or a long-term vision, the Giants’ brain trust would be wise to take a hard look at securing Sanders, who could step in as the Day 1 starter even if Big Blue signs a bridge quarterback in free agency to hedge its bet.
Chris Trapasso of CBS on taking Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe at No. 3 with Ward and Sanders off the board:
Semi nightmare for the Giants, but Jalen Milroe has freaky talent and is an ascending thrower. Another high-upside passer for Brian Daboll.
James Hicks of Hall of Football on taking Ward:
The Giants may be gun-shy to commit a “lottery” pick on a QB after watching Daniel Jones suffer through two straight awful seasons. But New York feels it will need to have an answer for Jayden Daniels, who seems set on bedeviling the NFC East for the next decade.
In his first and only season at Miami (after transferring from Wash St.), Ward transformed the ‘Canes into a national power, topping the CFB in touchdown passes (39), yards per attempt (9.5) and rating (172.2). He threw just seven interceptions. Ward is a tremendous athlete but needs to prune some inconsistency from his game to be a factor at the next level.
