Another addition to the Bengals’ defensive coaching staff.
Not long after news broke that the Cincinnati Bengals were hiring Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden to the same position, we now have another hire.
According to Paul Dehner of The Athletic, the Bengals are hiring former New England Patriots defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery to the same position in Cincinnati.
Montgomery becomes the second former Patriots assistant to land in Cincinnati, as the team also hired offensive line coach Scott Peters following his one year of coaching the position in New England.
The 45-year-old Montgomery began his coaching career in 2003 as a grad assistant with the Iowa Hawkeyes, where he was a standout defensive tackle collegiately under both Hayden Fry and Kirk Ferentz.
After bouncing around the college ranks for several years, Montgomery broke into the NFL in 2015 as a defensive front assistant for the Green Bay Packers for three years, then was promoted to be the team’s defensive line coach in 2018. He received another promotion in 2022, this time as the Packers’ defensive line coach and run game coordinator.
Montgomery then became the Patriots defensive line coach in 2024 before being let go after head coach Jerod Mayo was fired.
