Is the Giants’ defensive coordinator the right man for the job?
For the first time in recent memory, the New York Giants are responding to a losing season by not making any significant changes to their front office or coaching staff.
John Mara made the decision to retain both Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen as the head coach and general manager. It’s also being widely reported that the Giants intend to keep both Mike Kafka and Shane Bowen in place as their offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively.
With Kafka, at least, it’s understandable. After all, Daboll assumed play calling duties after the 2023 season, but not much changed. It’s tough to lay blame at Kafka’s feet when he seemed more like “Assistant to the head coach” than “Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach”.
Bowen, however, is a different story. Mara admitted that he was disappointed in the defense saying, “Quite frankly, I didn’t think our defense played very well this year at all. I know that when you have an offense that performs like that, you’re putting more pressure on your defense. But we need to make improvements there. I’m tired of watching teams go up and down the field on us. So, I think that has to be addressed.”
At the time it seemed as though it was only a matter of time until Bowen would be fired. However, it now looks as though the Giants want to give Bowen another chance.
So we put it to you: Should the Giants give Bowen another opportunity to build the defense in his image? Or should he be replaced with a defensive coordinator who is more in line with what the Giants envisioned when they hired Wink Martindale in 2022?
