Should the Rams draft Quinn Ewers in 2025?
The Los Angeles Rams don’t know yet where they will be picking in the first round, but for now most expect Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers to be available when they are on the clock. As Matthew Stafford inches closer to 40 (he’ll be 38 when next year’s Super Bowl happens), could Ewers be Sean McVay’s developmental project in the meantime?
Ewers declared for the NFL Draft on Wednesday, ending speculation that he would transfer for a second time to accumulate more NIL money and potentially improve his stock in 2026.

Leaving high school early to enroll at Ohio State in 2021, Ewers was the country’s top prospect at the time, ranking ahead of Caleb Williams.
But Ewers didn’t want to wait for C.J. Stroud to enter the NFL Draft — that would have meant sitting for two years, but at the time he didn’t know if it would be three or four — so he transferred to Texas in 2022. As a starter for head coach Steve Sarkisian that year, Ewers had 15 touchdowns and six interceptions, but missed several games with an injury.
The next year, Texas brought in another number one recruit, this time quarterback Arch Manning. Ewers has been able to hold off Peyton and Eli’s nephew for two seasons and helped the Longhorns get to the final four of the CFP, throwing 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
His career has now ended with a difficult 28-14 loss to the same Ohio State that he left because he didn’t want to compete there.
However, Ewers still possesses certain traits that made him the number one recruit in the nation a few years ago and might be available when the Rams are picking late in the first round. Remember, a year ago at this time, prospects Michael Penix, J.J. McCarthy, and Bo Nix were thought to be locks for day two.
Until the draft process happened and desperate teams felt they couldn’t wait another year to find a quarterback.
Nix helped the Broncos reach the playoffs and Penix played as well as any rookie in the last few games of the season.
CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso had the following notes on Ewers:
- Age as of Week 1: 22 years old
- Height: 6-foot-2
- Weight: 210 pounds
- Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

Position: No. 4 QB | Overall: No. 52
Comparison: Davis Mills
Like Ewers, Mills was a highly touted recruit who played quality football in college, yet never quite met the lofty expectations aligned with his recruiting ranking. Mills and Ewers both have high-caliber albeit not tremendous arms and in short stretches can look like promising starters. Yet the ability to quickly read coverages and adapt is not fully developed. Also like Mills, Ewers’ ability to create with his legs occurs infrequently and only in dire situations, plus accuracy is not a true strength to their games.
Los Angeles Rams. Matthew Stafford is cruising of late, but he is entering his late 30s. Ewers could be a draft-and-stash option for Sean McVay and Co.
Would you be satisfied with the Rams using a first round pick on Quinn Ewers?
