Skylar Thompson a free agent after practice squad contract expires.

According to a post made on social media by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Monday morning, Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson is no longer a member of the team’s roster after his practice squad contract ran out.

Now a free agent, Thompson is free to sign with any team — including those still in the NFL Playoffs.

Thompson saw his backup quarterback position disintegrate after poor play and a “painful” rib injury against the Seattle Seahawks during Week Three of the 2024 season. Thompson was forced into action after starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another concussion in Week Two against the Buffalo Bills.

Thompson saw action in two games in 2024 — finishing the season with 21 completions on 33 attempts, 187 yards passing and zero touchdowns. He also contributed one rushing attempt for four yards and had two fumbles.

After Thompson’s injury, the Dolphins turned to former Baltimore Ravens practice squad quarterback Tyler Huntley as Tagovailoa’s primary backup. After Huntley’s victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 17, the young quarterback intimated to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that the Dolphins were interested in bringing him back for the 2025 season.

After a poor game against the New York Jets in a win-or-go-home situation in Week 18, Huntley’s future with Miami is also up in the air.

We will see if the Dolphins decide to bring Thompson (or Huntley) back to South Florida as the offseason gets started.
