New York Giants news for Wednesday

Good morning New York Giants fans!

Other Giant observations

The Players’ All-Pro | NFLPA

For the third consecutive season, Dexter Lawrence was voted First Team All-Pro at nose tackle by the NFL Players Association. Lawrence, who was also recently named to his third consecutive Pro Bowl, has now made the list in all three years of this particular award’s existence.

The 6-foot-4, 340-pounder recorded a career-high nine sacks in his sixth season, despite missing the final five games with a dislocated elbow. Lawrence increased his career sack total to 30, climbing to 13th in franchise history and third among defensive tackles.

Jalin Hyatt on Giants after Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll stay: ‘We’ve got a lot of problems that we gotta fix’ | New York Daily News

The Giants’ players had mixed reactions in Monday’s locker room to the news that Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll were back for 2025. Asked why he had a disappointing second NFL season, Jaylin Hyatt’s review of the entire offensive system was damning:

“I don’t know,” Hyatt said. “We’ve got a lot of problems that we’ve got to fix. And that’s where I’m gonna leave it.”

Dianna Russini of The Athletic said on a recent episode of the Scoop City podcast she believes that the Giants’ win over the Indianapolis Colts likely eased Mara’s doubts.

“I think that game, in a way, helped Daboll,” she said. “I think that saved him because here’s the one thing I’ll give him credit for: Those guys still play hard for him in the locker room. They love him. He’s very visible in the building. He’s got good energy about him.”

The real question is what mark must this regime hit to justify a fifth year. Three or four wins won’t do it. Mara said on Monday if he’s sitting here next year feeling like he does now, wholesale changes are coming. Is six with a rookie enough? Seven? Eight-plus you feel good, unless Mara really does expect playoffs.

It’s not a great situation to be in.

Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll should look within first to bring Giants change | New York Post

Hearing every word from John Mara and then Brian Daboll and finally Joe Schoen, it is patently clear that no one is happy, no one has all the answers and everyone is in agreement that it cannot go on this way.

Cannot go on this way? How can anyone claim that is what the Giants are thinking?

Giants touted ‘plan,’ ‘process’ for keeping status quo, but do they have either? | The Athletic

The Giants can afford to sit tight with Bowen because the coordinator cycle takes longer to start up since there are so many head-coaching vacancies to be filled. Bowen spent the previous six seasons on Mike Vrabel’s staff in Tennessee. With Vrabel arguably the top head-coaching candidate on the market, the Giants could wait to see whether he’ll request to bring Bowen to his next stop. That would allow the Giants to get out of Bowen’s contract without firing him.

What traits Giants players are seeking from their next quarterback | New York Post

Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor has more of the new prototype in mind after watching Jayden Daniels spark the Commanders and becoming a big fan of the Patriots’ Drake Maye’s improvisational style.

“Someone who gives everybody a lift,” Eluemunor said. “In this day and age — with defensive ends getting smaller, faster and stronger — you need to have guys that can help out the offensive line. By that I mean when one of your guys is beat, you need a quarterback that can make a guy miss and manipulate the pocket, run around, throw it downfield. More like the mobile, dual-threat crazy-thrower type.”

NFL Draft 2025: Who should Giants take if they can’t get Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward? | NJ.com

The only reason the Giants should take a QB not named Sanders or Ward at No. 3 is if Drew Allar declares for the draft at the last minute. Allar, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound standout at Penn State, has drawn comparisons to peak Carson Wentz and CJ Stroud. Alas, he might just stay in school — which is probably the best thing for his development.

If that happens, the Giants should absolutely take Hunter — who, as a hybrid cornerback-wide receiver, fits two position needs — then swing on Dart or Milroe, who could compete with the veteran bridge they sign, in Round 2.

Top 2025 Free Agent Target: CB Asante Samuel Jr., Los Angeles Chargers. Deonte Banks has struggled during his first two years in the NFL, making cornerback one of the Giants’ top needs this offseason. Even if they opt to rebuild and get younger, targeting Samuel in free agency would be a smart move. He’s one of the top players available at the position and is only 25 years old.

Wan’Dale Robinson forced four missed tackles this week. Along with Jerry Jeudy, that was the most of any wide receiver this week.

NFL Week 18 Under Review: Baffling Decisions by the Jaguars and Giants Kick Off the 2025 Hiring Cycle | The Ringer

It’s time to start talking about the Giants like we talk about the Jets.

I have a request: Someone please explain to me how the Giants have convinced the football world that they’re a competent organization. Everyone makes fun of New Jersey’s other team, the Jets, and to be fair, you should make fun of the Jets. Yet when we discuss the Giants, we pretend they’re just on a temporary, short-lived stretch of bad luck. That is not the case! We’re talking about a decade-long run of incompetence. Don’t believe me? OK, let’s go to the numbers. In the past 10 seasons, the Giants are 57-106-1. The only two teams with fewer wins during that span are the Jets and the Jaguars.
